HAPPY EARTH MONTH, LARCHMONT!

April brings the realization of Spring, with warmer weather, holidays, and celebrations of Earth and nature. We've dedicated this month's newsletter to highlight Village news and upcoming events fitting with these themes, and hope that Larchmont residents take the time this month to learn more, explore and appreciate the Earth and the environment.

Village News and Updates

Village of Larchmont Recognized as #2 on Westchester Magazine's List of Most Green Places in Westchester

Larchmont has reached second place on Westchester Magazine's List of Most Green Places in Westchester. The list placed municipalities according to per-capita baseline greenhouse-gas emissions, for which the Village of Larchmont is one of the lowest in the County, just behind Sleepy Hollow.

Over the years, thanks to community groups such as the Larchmont Environmental Committee, the Larchmont community has been at the forefront of local sustainability issues, including the first gas-powered leaf blower ban in the Northeastern United States. Of note, as part of FY 2024-25 budget discussions, Village administration were able to dramatically change budget lines for energy costs such as electricity and fuel due to switching to LED streetlights Village-wide and procuring more hybrid vehicles as part of the Village's fleet inventory. These translated into tangible savings within the Village's budget in light of increasing costs due to inflation.

Village of Larchmont Recognized as Tree City USA by Arbor Day Foundation for 43rd Year, and as Approved Member of the Mayors' Monarch Pledge from the National Wildlife Federation

The Village of Larchmont has been recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA for the 43rd Year in a Row. This accomplishment could not have been realized without the hard work of community resident volunteers, the Village's Parks & Trees Committee, and our Department of Public Works.

In addition, the Village has been approved as a member for another year in a row as part of the National Wildlife Federation's Mayors' Monarch Pledge!

Larchmont Climate Smart Communities Task Force - Update

In January 2023, the Larchmont Village Board established the Larchmont Climate Smart Communities Task Force to advance the Village's recognition as a Climate Smart Community in New York State. With the assistance from the Larchmont Environmental Committee, the Village Board, and Village Administration, the Task Force has documented the Village's recent environmental efforts and initiatives, and this Spring has submitted the application to be recognized as a Bronze-Level Certified Climate Smart Community. The Village hopes to hear some good news soon!

Events this Month

Pre-Register Now for Larchmont's Flint Park Day Camp!

On Thursday April 18th, 2024, from 5:30 - 7:30 pm, Mamaroneck High School will be hosting its second annual TEDx event. This year's theme is "Unveiling the Invisible Struggle: Mental Health's Ripple Effect on Adolescents, Families, and Communities". At this event, we aim to capture the multifaceted nature of mental health challenges, emphasizing the interlinked experiences of adolescents, families, schools, and communities. By exploring the challenges related to mental health (everything from better navigating the college process, to dealing with the stress of projects or interviews, to improving the family dynamic), we hope to foster a deeper understanding of how we can better address these issues and ways everyone can collectively approach their mental health differently. At this event, we endeavor to inspire empathy, understanding, and action, aiming to pave the way for a more inclusive and compassionate approach to mental health in our schools, families, communities, and society.

At the event, we will be hosting visionary leaders and mental health experts to shed lights on these existential issues. Everyone from NBC Anchor Kate Snow to Mental Health Company CEO Betsy Parker will be speaking at this inspiring event. We hope to see you there! Tickets can be purchased (or reserved for free if you are a student or teacher) at https://www.showtix4u.com/events/tedxmhs

*There will be live Spanish translations and a specialized bilingual speaker for those who speak Spanish.

What is the Sprint to Flint?

The Sprint to Flint is an annual community running event taking place in the heart of the Village of Larchmont in early summer. It’s not just a race but is a true summer party: Along the iconic route that weaves its way around Larchmont Manor, event goers are entertained by live music. After their dash around the local neighborhood, runners and walkers make their way back to Flint Park for live music, pizza and summer fruits!

In 2024, the race is added its inaugural “tots race” - a 200 yard dash around Flint Park - for the younger runners in our community.
