The 2024 CTL Spring Workshop Series begins next week with a presentation by Aaron Prillaman on Course Globalization for Beginners. If you’re new to DDCC or have just never globalized a course, this workshop is for you. This first workshop (Zoom link) will be held on Tuesday, March 26th at 3:00 PM. You can join in-person in Gee N118 or on Zoom. This will also be an opportunity for faculty to participate in a session using the meeting owl technology going into the flexible classroom spaces.

The CTL Events Website is now updated for Spring 2 with a section for Spring Workshop Details (see the upcoming workshops and descriptions) and a section for Workshop Recordings. These sections will update as we add more workshop details and recordings.

We hope to see you at a Spring Workshop soon!

Japanese Drumming Performance

By Aaron Prillaman

There is a certain allure of drumming that awakens a feeling in all of us. When we hear drums they make us feel excited and energized. Drums make us want to dance, or at least bob our heads. On Tuesday, March 26th at noon in the Rittling Conference Center, we will have an opportunity to experience the magic of Japanese drumming from Taikoza. Taikoza was formed in 1995 and has performed internationally as well as for film and television soundtracks. This show will feature large, barrel-shaped Japanese taiko drums. The large size of these drums requires a certain athleticism of the performers as they churn out engaging rhythms along with dance-like movements while playing. The performance will also feature other Japanese instruments like the shakuhachi and the fue, both bamboo flutes capable of producing ethereal melodies that will evoke a sense of tranquility much needed during our busy schedules. A talented dancer will also complement the ensemble, enhancing the experience. This is an incredible opportunity for our students to embark on a cultural journey without even having to leave campus. Join us and let the pulsating rhythm of traditional Japanese taiko drums whisk you away on a Japanese adventure!

Travel to Japan Next Spring!

By Michelle Williamson

I’m excited to announce that DDCC will visit Japan again over Spring Break of 2025! We would love for you to join us on this adventure to the land of the rising sun. We’ll travel across the main island as we visit Tokyo, Kyoto, and Hiroshima. Travelers will experience Japan as a country of beautiful contrasts, harmoniously blending ancient traditions with modern wonders. In addition to experiencing Japanese pop culture and participating in traditional activities (such as a tea ceremony), we may even have the opportunity to speak with a survivor of the Hiroshima bombing. As we approach the 80th anniversary, this is an increasingly rare opportunity and one that our travelers over Spring Break 2023 found particularly meaningful. Please share this information with your students and contact me or Sarah Wright if you have any questions or would like me to give a presentation to your classes.

By Jason Setzer

You have access to more libraries than you may know. Developed by Candid, a nonprofit organization that specializes in nonprofits, Candid Library is a free library consisting of books about the social sector and philanthropy-related topics. Of particular interest is the collection’s focus on marginalized communities, equity, inclusion, business management, and grant writing. Similar to the DDCC’s Dogwood Digital Library, Candid Library uses the OverDrive platform which allows users to access books on a computer or download them to mobile devices via the Libby app. Register for a free account and begin borrowing. Candid Library is not associated with DDCC but feel free to contact DDCC Library with questions.
