hvoss - Supporting Children and Young People from Ukraine

"As part of the ongoing work to support Ukrainian refugees in Herefordshire, we have developed a programme that directly supports children and young people seeking safe refuge from the conflict. This is being delivered in the children's native language so they are able to express their feelings, needs and wishes. and as a Ukrainian relocated through the war to the UK, I have a shared lived experience."

Oksana

By going into the schools to spend time with children and through crafting activities including making pillows, candles and hats for Easter, drawing on bags, textile toys and modelling with paper and cardboard, the children begin to share their emotions about school and home and establish trust with Oksana, who draws on her experience in Ukraine and since arriving here in 2022. Continuously assessing wellbeing enables Oksana to draw on specialist support through our partnership with CLD Trust and maintain close communication with schools and families.

This wonderful project is funded through Herefordshire Council’s Community Integration Scheme and includes events which bring children and families together and celebrate Ukrainian culture, offering opportunities to build circles of mutual support and develop natural friendships.

The support and events we offer are free to the child, the family and the school. Contact us if you would like to know more about how you can access this free support.

Ofcom announce update on infrastructure to deliver landline calls

Ofcom has reported that the network which landline phone calls have traditionally been delivered over, the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), is becoming harder and more expensive to maintain, and needs to be replaced.

BT has taken the decision to retire its PSTN by December 2025, with other providers that use BT’s network following the same timescale, and other companies with their own networks (such as Virgin Media) following suit.

Telecoms providers are also investing in new systems and networks – for example, upgrading old copper-based broadband lines to full-fibre. They will need to switch customers away from the old PSTN at the same time as upgrading their technology.

Whilst this change will impact organisations of all types (including VCSEs), we encourage all VCSE organisations who rely on a landline service to be aware of this upcoming change.

When the time comes to update these services, we would encourage organisations to speak to their providers about specific circumstances, such as whether you predict that you will need extra support to change your service over, or to raise the dependency of your services on your landline phone. Find out more information on the Ofcom webpage.

Keep Me Safe…When I am Crying Launch Information

Keep Me Safe… When I am Crying is a new guidance to support those who meet with families with babies of a very young age where crying may be reported as a worry or concern by the parent or carer.

Babies cry for many reasons. They are hardwired to cry whenever they need a parent or carer to help them out because their brains have yet to develop the circuits that allow for self-control or understanding.

Any practitioner who has contact with a family with a new- or very young- baby needs to understand why babies cry and how to support families to keep babies safe.

Join the Launch Webinars to learn more about this guidance and how you can use it to support families with a new, or very young, baby.

*There is no need to book, simply save the MS Teams Link above for the launch time that you wish to attend, and join the event at the start time.

Self-neglect & Hoarding

The Care Act statutory guidance 2014 defines self-neglect as; “a wide range of behaviour neglecting to care for one’s personal hygiene, health or surroundings and includes behaviour such as hoarding”.

Representatives from Herefordshire Safeguarding Adults Boards partners have worked with Worcestershire Safeguarding Adults Board to update our local policy that includes a toolkit to aid professionals in identifying and responding to cases of self-neglect and / or hoarding.

For more information, view the Self Neglect and Hoarding Policy and Practice Guidance

Also see information and guidance from SCIE: SCIE self-neglect at a glance

For households where hoarding has been identified it is recommended that a referral to Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service is made for a Home Fire Safety Visit.

Clutter Image Ratings are used to identify the level of any possible hoarding allowing all practitioners to have a common understanding of the level of risk for the household. View Clutter rating images here.

Home Fire Safety Visits maximise the opportunity to help individuals stay safe and independent. The qualified technician will also identify any health and care needs that require signposting to local services to help ensure safety and wellbeing.

To refer a client for a Home Fire Safety Visit please complete an online referral or download the referral form

Home Fire Safety Visit leaflet

Sandwell Safeguarding Adults Board has produced a short film to help people identify self-neglect in themselves and others – and know what to do about it.
