PESA TAKES ACTION FOR MENTAL HEALTH

In partnership with DMH, PESA hosts a resource booth at community health event

In a world where mental health awareness is increasingly vital, organizations like PESA are stepping up to the plate, ensuring that communities have access to much-needed resources and support. Partnering with the LA County Department of Mental Health (DMH), PESA is making significant strides in bridging the gap between individuals and the mental health services they require.

DMH, through its "Take Action for Mental Health" initiative, has been instrumental in organizing events across various service areas, providing communities with essential mental health resources. These events serve as a beacon of hope, offering support to families, youth, and the elderly in need. Moreover, by inviting organizations like PESA to participate, DMH amplifies the impact, enriching the array of services available to attendees.

Recently, in the Antelope Valley and San Fernando Valley service areas, PESA showcased its commitment to community welfare by setting up booths and engaging with over 70 community members. Elizabeth Sosa, a dedicated Community Representative, played a pivotal role in facilitating PESA's involvement in these gatherings. Alongside fellow advocates like PESA’s Assistant Director of Youth Services, Stephanie Santillan and Community Outreach Coordinator, Steve Martinez, Sosa ensured that attendees received first hand information about PESA's behavioral health services.

Sosa emphasized, “Attending these events is crucial because you’re able to meet the community where they are and share the ample resources available to them. When organizations like PESA and others participate, it sends a clear message to the community that we are committed to showing up and serving them.”

At these booths, PESA engaged with visitors, shedding light on the diverse range of services it offers. From counseling and group therapy to educational resources on pressing issues like the fentanyl crisis and cyberbullying, PESA's outreach efforts were comprehensive and impactful. Pamphlets distributed to students and parents contained crucial tips, warning signs, and prevention techniques, empowering them to navigate mental health challenges effectively.

Reflecting on the experience, Sosa highlighted the importance of listening to the community's needs, particularly the youth: “It's always striking when engaging with younger individuals, as it underscores the importance of understanding desired services. Such insights are invaluable, informing us directly about the support they seek within their community.”

In essence, PESA's proactive involvement in the DMH-sponsored events exemplifies its dedication to fostering mental well-being within communities. By collaborating with stakeholders and engaging directly with individuals, PESA is not only providing crucial services but also fostering a culture of openness and support surrounding mental health. As they continue to show up and make a difference, PESA sets a commendable example for organizations striving to create healthier, more resilient communities.
