The Appeal of the Urban Forest

As the year end approaches, we must join the chorus of beneficial and vital organizations asking for the financial support of our friends in and around the community. Newport would not be the same without its trees.

Thanks to our supporters, we were able to meet all of our goals for 2023:

Purchased and planted over 200 trees in Newport, including 100 new trees in Miantonomi Park

Provided care for 215 public trees in our community

Provided volunteer opportunities totaling over 330 service hours

Propagated 115 progeny from 14 of the community's most iconic trees

Delivered tree-focused programming to over 550 youth in Newport's public and summer schools

To continue this work we need your support. We cannot plant and care for our shared forest without you. Please consider a contribution to the Newport Tree Conservancy and join us in our mission to plant for the future.

The Season of Thanks

We would like to thank Citizens for naming the Newport Tree Conservancy one of its Citizens in Action award recipients for 2023, recognizing our work in the community.

We would also like to thank Citizens staff for joining us and working alongside us as volunteers across multiple events this year. Thank you for caring for the trees.

NTC would also like to extend its thanks to the Rehoboth Garden Club. The opportunity to connect with those in our area with an equal passion for the trees and woody plants within our landscape was fantastic.

We are thrilled to partner with local clubs and other groups to provide a rich learning experience. Thank you for reaching out about program offerings.

Your Group is Invited in 2024

The Newport Tree Conservancy offers many educational opportunities throughout the year, both for area students and adult learners. If you aren't able to make it to one of our regularly scheduled public events or would like to schedule something private for your organization, you can have the event come to you! NTC welcomes and encourages the opportunity to connect.

If you have a group, club, or organization that would be interested in engaging with us, please reach out to request a program for the upcoming year.

The Star of Newport:

Determining the Identity of one of Newport's Most Incredible Trees

-Joe Verstandig, Living Collections Manager

One of my absolute favorite trees in all of Newport is the exceptional magnolia planted in front of the Newport Art Museum. Every spring, it reliably produces thousands of gorgeous, fragrant flowers to broadcast the arrival of a welcomed spring. Visitors in town are impressed and enchanted, while Newport residents are reminded of just how lucky they are to live in such a beautiful place. I was very impressed when I first observed the magnolia bloom over two years ago, still being brand new to Newport and the Tree Conservancy. Much time was spent enjoying the flower’s sweet fragrance and taking photos of the blooms, the smooth bark and majestic octopus-like branching. A metal tag attached to one of the twisting branches displays the plant’s identity as a star magnolia, easily noticeable walking the path to the building. If there is one thing I’ve learned the more knowledge I acquire and the more gardens and arboretums I visit, it’s that you shouldn’t always trust a label. The more I observed the beautiful magnolia, the more I questioned the tag...
