Cathie Gifford, Christal Montague (NYCB Board), Ruth Riddick, Luis Laboy, Elisabeth Kranson

NYCB Board President

"The value of 'one addict helping another is without parallel'," says NYCB President, Luis Laboy. "And certification ensures professional boundaries, and that knowledge, skills, and abilities are maintained for a high level of quality in the workforce."

Luis Laboy speaks to E-News about his route to the peer recovery profession and his experience of serving at NYCB.

NYCB Certification Coordinator

"I like my new title!" laughs Cathie Gifford, incoming Certification Coordinator, now a staff position at NYCB's parent non-profit, IUA.

A familiar presence and tireless support for certification candidates, Cathie's new position won't involve any extra service hours - but she will, for the first time, qualify for paid vacation!

Congratulate Cathie here and read our exclusive interview with her here.

"Speech doesn't need to be licensed."

Ruth Riddick calls on advocates to resist efforts to license the peer profession

"There’s a regrettable trend emerging in behavior health (mental health and substance use disorder) that non-clinical professionals should be licensed," writes NYCB Community Outreach, Ruth Riddick, in a trending LinkedIn post. "I don't agree."

Did You Know? Peer Exams

Elisabeth Kranson's tips for successful candidates

"Did you know that you have to be certified to take the IC&RC Peer Recovery exam for CRPA?" asks Elisabeth Kranson, NYCB Director of Certification. "The exam is not open to the public, and candidates can't pre-register themselves."

Sounds weird! Tell us more?

"We have to wait until you're Board-approved as CRPA-Provisional (24 months only!) - or for full CRPA - before NYCB can pre-register you for the exam," she clarifies. Read more here.

If you're eligible for the exam, click here to ask Elisabeth to pre-register you. No time like the present!

JUST FOR TRAINERS

2025 PROGRAM & New Marketing Opportunity

"Seventy-five (and counting!) professional trainers are celebrating the new year as renewing members of the 2025 NYCB Trainer Registry Program," says Program Manager, Ruth Riddick. "The training profession, offering the highest standards to peer recovery students, is thriving!" Visit the NYCB Trainer Registry Directory here.

The 2025 program took effect on January 1. "There are a number of new benefits, but the basic protocols described on our program web page stay the same," Ruth confirms. See NYCB Trainer Registry membership program details here.

"And we've distributed more than 350 training approvals badges for foundational trainings that will be delivered in 2025 - that's the domain-based training (46 hours); Medication Supported Recovery (4 hours) and CARC Electives (10 hours), posted to https://www.asapnys.org/nycb-approved-training/. That's a lot of options in the field!"

Are you in?

If you haven't already submitted your 2025 NYCB Trainer Registry membership renewal, your membership and all approvals are expired. You'll find the renewal application form at https://tinyurl.com/NYCB-TR-renewal-2025. A late fee of $25 will be added on February 1.

And 2025 is a special date for the NYCB Trainer Registry program. Ruth explains, "The NYCB Trainer Registry was established under Roy Kearse's leadership in 2020. We turn 5 this year! We've come a long way from ASAP's Pearl Street Board room where the program was first sketched out in late 2019 - and we're only getting started!"
