Dear Students,
Last week was such a special week. We so enjoyed celebrating the achievements of the class of 2024, and the Commencement Ceremony was a wonderful culmination of the week’s celebrations. We wish the Class of 2024 well, and we look forward to seeing all that they accomplish as they move forward!
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the class of 2027 completed the Year 1 Comprehensive exam, officially finishing year 1. Congratulations to them! And the Class of 2025 is marching toward the end of third year, as the class of 2026 is marching toward the start of third year. Exciting times!
Times of transition are such good opportunities for reflection. We hope you take a moment to reflect on all you have accomplished in this past year. How have you grown? What are you most proud of? Congratulate yourself on these successes. What do you most want to work on next? Consider how you might do that in the next year.
Since this is a big transition period for all of the classes, we know that questions/concerns can crop up for you. Please know that we are still here for you – and we’d love the opportunity to connect with you! Please feel free to reach out to either one of us – we can easily set up a quick call or meeting.

Exceptional Educator - May 2024
Dr. Lisa Sanders | Internal Medicine / Assistant Professor, College of Medicine Pediatrics
Thank you for your nominations. The committee has reviewed your submissions and selected Dr. Sanders for the May Exceptional Educator!
| |
|
"When I sat down to meet with Dr. Sanders for the first time, I had no idea how much of an inspiration and role model for me she would become. She is an example of the physician that I hope to be—dedicated wholly to supporting and improving her community, furthering innovative research in her field, and profoundly impacting each student that is lucky enough to know her. I met Dr. Sanders as a first-year student when an advisor suggested I reach out to her about becoming involved in the Ybor Youth Clinic After Hours medical student organization. Since then, Dr. Sanders has mentored me, and many other students, to become leaders in outreach and research in our community. As the executive director of the Ybor Youth Clinic (YYC), she created and supports a unique student-run free STI and HIV testing clinic for adolescents. Through this clinic, she teachers many medical students how to serve the adolescent population and become comfortable talking to patients about their sexual history. | |
Both students and community members alike benefit greatly from her work. She has a special way of inspiring all of her students and goes the extra mile to support them in achieving their goals. She also serves as a research mentor for many medical students, meaningfully contributing to scientific literature and training future physicians to do the same. The quantity and quality of research projects being produced by the YYC is a testament to her mentorship and academic leadership. It would be difficult to overstate the impact that Dr. Sanders has had on her students and her community. The University of South Florida is extremely lucky to have Dr. Sanders and should recognize the profound impact that she has had on this community."
-Margaret Van Cleve, c/o 2026 MD Student
