Amplifying Mid-Shore Voices: WHCP-FM's Journey from Local Station to Radio for All

easton-studio-steve-shupak-and-starlimg-1 image

Six months ago, after eight years as a low-power station (71 watts) confined to a 10-mile radius around Cambridge and reaching 20,000 residents, WHCP-FM (formerly WHCP-LP) won a rare FCC license to upgrade to a more robust frequency. Currently airing at 91.7 ‘on the radio dial,’ the station’s signal has amplified to 14,000 watts, extending its reach to over 190,000 residents across the region from Talbot to Wicomico County, along the Bay and into Southern Maryland.

There’s more to WHCP’s recent developments. In addition to establishing a sister studio on N. Washington St. in Easton (alongside their Race Street, Cambridge location), WHCP is now also a member station of award-winning NPR, adding flagship programs such as “Morning Edition” and “All Things Considered.”

Swimming Santa's gifted delightful day for raising funds, spirits

65808b40044c5 image

CAMBRIDGE — Despite December’s usually frightful forecast, every year a group of hardy souls wearing Santa hats head to the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Resort to willingly take a dip in the nippy Choptank River.

They do it gladly, for love and money — love of community, money to help others in need — as part of the Care and Share Fund, Inc. annual Santa Swim.

Individuals and teams signing up enlist sponsors who contribute money for their effort. The donated dollars are used to help improve life for the many at risk adults and children throughout Dorchester County.

Holiday programs funded by the Santa Swim provide individuals and families with food, clothes, toys, and other items. But throughout the year, the Fund also aids those with critical needs that are not able to be filled by public sources or Dorchester County Department of Social Services during the clients’ period of crisis. The nonprofit Care & Share Fund, which began in 1998, also provides help with prescriptions, utility payments to prevent cut-off, medical equipment, hearing aids, diabetic supplies, and a variety of other services, including free notary service.

Fortunately, the weather for this year’s festive dunk on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 11 a.m. was anything but frightful for the 20 swimmers, who helped raise a bit over $5,000.

“This is a wonderful holiday tradition that raises funds for an organization doing good for the community. The weather for the event was the best I can remember in years but even when the weather is horrible there is a solid group of community centered residents going out into the river to help those in our county that need assistance,” noted Dorchester Chamber of Commerce President/CEO Bill Christopher.

'Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer' parody celebrates Dorchester

6580b46cb07da image

CAMBRIDGE — Henry VanDyke was struck by a creative thunderbolt eleven years ago. And they have been playing his Dorchester version of “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” every Christmas since.

“Eleven years ago I was pumping gas. And the original song came on the radio and I just started singing with my words and about three quarters of the song was written right there. That is what my wife and I do. We are always making up funny lyrics.”

For example he took “Every Light in the House is On” and rewrote it about every light on his dashboard being on.

“That was about an old truck I had. We actually recorded that one. A couple of others I never wrote down,” he said.

To catch the yuletide magic, he borrows friends’ recorders and laptops.

For Grandma he said, “It is just an instrumental. We purchased a karaoke track and then put the words to it.” There is a bluegrass bounce to it.

He is starting to reconsider the master of the parody Weird Al Yankovich.

“He is starting to be a hero. I was telling my wife that he might be back.” He laughs.

Shop with Cop brings smiles, connections for Cambridge's children and officers

65808402e5971 image

CAMBRIDGE — Jurnee Cannon, 8, led the way down the narrow toy isles of the Cambridge Walmart on Dec. 14 with Officer Malik Shirley following close behind.

“You drive better than I do,” Shirley said to Cannon as she turned into another aisle and gazed up at the bright display of different dolls.

A moment before, Shirley had taken a toy off the top shelf for Cannon to put in her cart. It was a moment she remembered on the ride back to her house later that evening.

“He helped me get my doll that was on the top shelf,” she said to explain why she liked Shirley.

At 4 p.m. that Thursday, Cannon’s name was the first of two that was pulled from a red bucket at the Cambridge Police Department on Washington Street. Cannon and Nevaeh Moran, 6, were the two lucky children of the day to get the opportunity to “Shop with a Cop.”

For five years now, the department has been taking children out to Walmart to purchase items for themselves or for family members for the holidays.

The State of Chesapeake College: A Chat with President Cliff Coppersmith

Over the years, one of the most enjoyable interviews the Spy has every year around this time is our check-in with the president of Chesapeake College, Cliff Coppersmith.

There are several reasons for that. As the community college for the Mid-Shore, Chesapeake is one of those notable local institutions that genuinely change lives every day. Over the years, the college has been our most significant provider of a well-trained, professional workforce for the counties of Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne’s, and Talbot since it opened its doors. Still, it has grown into so much more than that mission.

With its increasingly broad scope of educational opportunities, Chesapeake has opened the door to affordable higher education to literally thousands of young adults in Mid-Shore since the college was founded in 1965.

CraZy LadyZ Supports Coastal Hospice

2023CoastalHospiceCraZyLadyZ6KCheck image

Ocean City, MD – December 14, 2023 – CraZy LadyZ presented a check to Tammy Patrick of Coastal Hospice for $6,490.00. They do an annual fundraising trip where they pick a local charity on the Lower Eastern Shore. CraZy LadyZ along with Braemar Travel match half of the contributions from their customers that sign up.

Jan stated, “This is the second year we have chosen Coastal Hospice…at one point our family members or we ourselves will most likely utilize hospice care. My Mom ended up in Hospice and they were amazing and I cannot say enough about them. It takes a very special person to care for our loved ones and dealing with the emotions of the family members. This is our way of recognizing the care and work you all do for the community. Not everyone is cut out to work for hospice.”

CraZy LadyZ is a woman’s boutique with fun clothes, handbags, and accessories. They are celebrating their 19th year in business and have two locations, one in West Ocean City, Maryland and Ocean View, Delaware.

Blue Christmas Service

The Christmas season is hard for those whose hearts are hurting.

The designation acknowledges the "Blue" feelings many people experience during the Advent and Christmas seasons.

For those who have lost a loved one, this is a time of acute loneliness. For those who have lost a relationship or a job, experienced failing health or financial setbacks, this is a time of pain, confusion and anxiety. We can still worship with honesty in the confidence that God shares our pain, understands our loss and seeks to be present in comforting and hopeful ways.

Blue Christmas is a gentle, contemplative service that offers comfort and hope for those carrying pain or loss during this season of celebration.
