Coffee with Pastor Kim on Sunday, May 19, 9:45 a.m. in the chapel room next to the office. You are welcome to come just to chat or to ask questions you have, including questions the Christian faith, church, baptism, or

membership. Hope to see you there!

"An Interview with Jane Elliot,”

A thirty minute documentary will be shown on Tuesday, May 28 at 7pm at the church. Immediately afterward there will be time for discussion of this movie as well as the “Color of Fear.”

Dear Friends,

Last Sunday’s worship was such an amazing blessing!

The baptisms of Mac, Zanna, Thurston, Aubrey, Jeremy and Barret and the welcoming of new members, Barb and Ray Stanford, Kathy Lewis, Brittany Link, and Shelly McBurnett are both a beautiful gift and a solemn responsibility for the congregation, as we promise to nurture each other in the Christian faith and in the love of Christ. Maplewood UMC is called to be, as Bishop Robert Schnase has stated it, “a school for love.” My prayer is that we are just that!!

It seems appropriate then that the question we will talk about on Sunday to conclude the sermon series, “Make Good Choices” is “What is the loving thing to do?” That might be the hardest question of the five we have asked in this sermon series.  I look forward to praying, listening, and leaning into this question with you as we worship together.

This coming Sunday is also Pentecost Sunday, the day we celebrate the gift of God’s Holy Spirit poured out upon Jesus’ disciples after he ascended to be with God. The gift of God’s Spirit given to us as followers of Jesus provides us with so much—the assurance of our identity as God’s children, the peace that comes from knowing God is with us, the power to do God’s work in the world, and all the wisdom and words we need to share the love of Christ with the people we meet every day. I’m sure more will come to mind as you reflect on all the ways God is present and active in your life as you get ready for Sunday. It will be a powerful day for worshiping together. In the meantime, please continue to pray for the newly baptized and newly joined members of Maplewood UMC!   See you Sunday!

God’s grace and peace be with you,

Pastor Kim

Please help Pastor Kim clear her book cases

bookshelves!!

There is a table behind the center section of the pews with books that are available for you to take! Once you take the book(s) that interest you, you are welcome to keep them, give them away, sell them if you must, just please, NO

Highlights from last Ad Council Meeting

Voted to hire 2 Classroom Assistants for Freedom School. Funds will come from our budgeted Freedom School line item and from the Freedom School Grants we received. Normally this is provided by LifewiseSTL but due to budget cuts we will have to provide them this Summer because we have to have two leaders in each class because of Safe Gathering guidelines.

Air conditioning compressor for Pastor’s study, office and conference room is being replaced. Replacement is covered by warrantee. (It has been replaced since our meeting)

Nancy Thompson presented a request for the church to get a VISTA volunteer to work with the Community Unity program. Nancy presented a general description of what the volunteer would do and the cost to the church. The cost would be approximately $4500 for the year. This is a federal program and the rest of the salary for the volunteer is paid by the government program. Nancy is providing the job description at our next meeting and a vote will be taken then whether or not to request a VISTA volunteer.

Our next Ad Council Meeting is this Sunday, May 19th at 6:30 p.m. in the Conference Room. As always, anyone is welcome to come to the Ad Counicl meetings.

MUMC Kids

This Sunday we will talk about what love is and how we can share God's love with others.

Last week we made Mothers Day gifts for all of the women in worship! We also learned about what it is to have wisdom, and we discussed the differences between having knowledge and having wisdom.
