In the bustling halls of Los Angeles Leadership Academy High School (LALA), the air was charged with anticipation and possibility on their recent College & Career Day, organized collaboratively by PESA.
This dynamic event brought together 15 guest speakers from diverse professional fields including nursing, real estate and therapy, alongside representatives from esteemed higher education institutions such as DigiPen Institute of Technology, California State University, Dominguez Hills, and Drexel University. With a turnout of 145 students, the event buzzed with excitement as participants eagerly deviled into the various opportunities made available to them.
The day opened with a captivating keynote by Bell Gardens Mayor, Jorgel Chavez. As Los Angeles County’s youngest elected mayor, he drew from his own experiences in his neighborhood and stressed the importance of perseverance. Mayor Chavez stirred the students, illustrating that despite challenges, dreams are attainable with steadfast determination. His message resonated deeply, empowering the audience with the belief that they too could overcome obstacles and realize their aspirations through unwavering commitment.
Elizabeth Sosa, PESA's Community Representative, highlighted the profound impact of witnessing successful speakers come from the same communities as the students, stating, "The speakers were role models for our students. They are people who share similar experiences and they were able to reach success. It gave the student confidence to strive for their own dreams.”
Energized by the inspiring stories shared by professionals from various fields, the students eagerly delved into the college fair, where representatives from esteemed institutions awaited. Here, amidst the bustling atmosphere, students found themselves immersed in invaluable opportunities to explore educational pathways, learn about financial aid support, and engage directly with representatives from prestigious institutions.
In the end, College & Career Day at LALA was not merely an event, it was a catalyst for transformation – offering tangible pathways to success and instilling in students the belief that their aspirations are within reach, no matter their background. As they departed, minds buzzing with newfound possibilities, it was clear that this day had planted seeds of hope that would continue to flourish in the years to come.
