THE PURSUIT.

Welcome to the Spring 2024 edition of The Pursuit, the electronic newsletter for alumni of Northeast College of Health Sciences. Quarterly, The Pursuit will share the latest Northeast College news and initiatives, highlight great events and tell the stories of outstanding Northeast students, faculty, staff, and alumni as they pursue academic excellence, leadership and professional best practices.

News from Northeast.

  • Long Island Campus - Significant progress has been made towards opening the College's proposed Long Island campus. A site visit was conducted by the NY Education Department on March 7-8 with a glowing report and recommendation for approval by the NYS Board of Regents. Having already been approved by our institutional accreditation body, MSCHE, a substantive change application has been submitted to the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE) for consideration at their Council meeting in July. Once approved, the College plans to open this branch campus and offer our renowned Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) program in the 2024-2025 academic year*. This program will make use of cutting-edge technology to support coursework and hands-on labs. We are excited to return to the New York metro area, and to ensure that the world’s top chiropractic education is even more accessible for tomorrow’s healthcare leaders.  We couldn't be more excited to share the latest developments and video of our progress with you. Do you know someone who would love to study chiropractic on Long Island? Please consider sharing this webpage with them.

*NOTE: The establishment and opening of Northeast College’s Long Island campus are contingent on pending regulatory approvals and are not confirmed nor guaranteed at this time.

  • New Programs - In our Winter Pursuit newsletter we reported that our three new programs (AAS in Radiologic Technology, AAS in Medical Sonography, and Massage Therapy certificate) have been approved by our accreditors and the NY Education Department. These programs are slated to begin in fall of 2024. Because of very strong interest in our new AAS programs, and because students in their first trimester participate in experiential learning at external sites, Northeast is pursuing additional clinical locations to accommodate more students. In additional preparation for future programmatic growth, we recently participated in an ARC-PA (the accrediting agency for Physician Assistant programs) conference in Atlanta, GA - a necessary step in the process of developing and launching a PA program. Northeast’s M.S. in PA program is planned to launch in January of 2026.

  • Our new cutting-edge sonography and radiological suites have been unveiled. The new Imaging Sciences facilities provide advanced learning spaces for students in Northeast's NEW associate degree programs in radiologic technology and diagnostic medical sonography. The suites are also the latest addition to the College’s state-of-the-art Anatomy Center, which already features the Computerized Anatomy Resource Lab (CARL) containing 3D virtual Anatomage technology, an extensive cadaveric dissection lab and an observation theater.

  • Northeast College of Health Sciences Massage Therapy Program Director Nicole Miller, LMT, and Crouse Health are working collaboratively to help law enforcement officers with loss and trauma through the Triage Massage project. Created in April 2024, the project will support the Onondaga County Sheriff and Syracuse Police departments.

Alumni Spotlight.

Nick Patterson (D.C. '11, M.S. '22), received his Doctor of Chiropractic degree and a Master of Science in Applied Clinical Nutrition degree from Northeast in 2011. The College's high pass rates on the national board exams was just one reason he chose the College. An externship completed at Brown Integrated Chiropractic, with Drs. Alison and Jason Brown (both D.C. '06), led to a position as an associate in their practice, where he gained further experience. Dr. Patterson now owns Dig Deep Chiropractic and Massage Therapy, located inside Purebred Athletics in Clifton Park, New York, where the focus is on treating soft-tissue injuries and recommending corrective exercises to keep patients healthy. For the future, he would like to see healthcare grow into a more integrative, patient-centered approach with all different healthcare professionals working together for the benefit of the patients. Dr. Patterson’s offers these words of advice: “Don’t be afraid to be different. Try new things and make mistakes. You may fail, you may not, but either way you will learn something that will help you grow!” Read more of his story here.

Alumni News.

Rebecca “Becky” Hosey (D.C. '03) has had anything but an ordinary career; and is now once again stepping out of the box to continue serving others in distinct ways. She was recently the recipient of 2024 Autoimmune Advocacy Leadership Award sponsored by the Autoimmune Association. Additionally, she participated in the Autoimmune Association's activities on Capitol Hill and was interviewed by local news channels in Albany for autoimmune awareness month, furthering her mission to bring forth awareness of autoimmune disease. In 2015, at the prime of her career, she was diagnosed with Sjögren’s Disease in addition to her existing stage four endometriosis diagnosis. She was astonished to encounter significant barriers as a patient and wondered how patients much more disadvantaged than herself could ever successfully traverse our fractured medical system. Dr. Hosey decided to begin a mission to change healthcare by empowering others, and altering how patients are viewed and ultimately treated. She authored Girl on a Gurney: Trading My White Coat for a Hospital Gown; a soon to be published book which reveals the unique perspective of an unwell medical provider struggling to navigate a convoluted health system. While the book has aspects of memoir following her medical journeys, it essentially functions as a self-help guide for patients and loved ones to get the most out of their healthcare, highlighting how to heal and live peaceful lives in the midst of chronic disease. Dr. Hosey has a strong commitment to medical excellence and remains a regular lecturer at several institutions, with the goal of reaching current and future healthcare providers.

Melissa McGwin (D.C. 21), affectionately known as Dr. Mel, blends her passion for sports and healthcare into her career at KIRO in NYC. Her understanding of sports injuries and performance optimization is deeply rooted in her athletic background as a former NCAA Division 1 volleyball athlete. Dr. Mel's transition from athletics to chiropractic care was a natural evolution, driven by her firsthand experiences with injuries and recovery during her volleyball career. "My time as an athlete taught me the importance of a holistic approach to wellness," she explains. "It's about addressing not just the symptoms but the underlying causes to help individuals achieve their optimal health." Beyond her clinical practice, Dr. Mel remains committed to community outreach and education, advocating for proactive wellness strategies. "Preventative care is essential," she asserts. "It's about empowering individuals to make informed choices that support their long-term health." As Dr. Mel continues to make strides in the chiropractic field, her impact resonates far beyond the treatment room, inspiring individuals to prioritize their health and embrace a holistic approach to wellness.

He joined Northeast College’s Board in 2011 and held a number of leadership roles, including Board vice-chair and chairperson of the Strategic Planning and Finance/Investment committees. The scholarship will be awarded each year honoring Mr. Palmucci's kind and giving nature.

Research Support.

The 27th Annual Research Symposium concluded this week, leaving a trail of vibrant discussions and a renewed spirit of collaboration. The symposium featured a dynamic program with Michele J. Maiers, DC, MPH, PhD presenting the keynote addresses on "Nonpharmacological Interventions for Musculoskeletal Conditions in Relationship to Healthy Aging: The Impact on Health Policies”, and other engaging discussions and presentations. The symposium served as a potent reminder of the transformative power of research and its potential to address critical challenges.

At Northeast College, students are immersed in discovery. Our curriculum prepares them to engage with essential scientific literature, analyze it and apply it. Several courses require the creation of a research proposal as a way of understanding the scientific process. The best of these proposals is recognized as such by our expert faculty.

Your contributions to the Student Research Fund at Northeast will help take some of these proposals to the next level: funding the research process. Students will gain real-world research experience as they add to the body of scientific knowledge in support of chiropractic and healthcare excellence.

Your generosity allows the College to increase its engagement in professional leadership activities to further the purpose of teaching and research. We deeply appreciate your generosity, and you may take pride in knowing that students’ future success will be attributable, in part, to your decision to give.
