The Millbrook High School gymnasium filled with cheers, chants and laughs on Thursday, December 8 as the Harlem Wizards, a professional basketball team that combines comedy and athleticism at fundraising events around the globe, faced off against a team of Millbrook teachers and staff.
A fundraiser for Millbrook’s classes of 2024 and 2025, the game was organized by senior and junior class advisors Colette Alonge-Watz, Michelle Cring, Jenna McCarthy and Nicholas Porta. The proceeds will help offset the costs of class trips, proms and breakfasts for both classes.
Alonge-Watz said that she thought about bringing the Wizards to Millbrook after seeing them perform at another local school and hearing positive feedback from the community.
“We’re always looking for fun and novel fundraisers,” she said. “I thought it would not only be a helpful way to raise money, but also a great opportunity to bring the community together for an exciting new event.”
School administrators and her fellow class advisors jumped at the opportunity, and after a few conversations with the Wizards’ office, the event was scheduled – and the entire school community hopped on board to make it happen.
“I was so impressed with and grateful for the way that the students, parents, faculty and staff mobilized,” she said. “Between scheduling, working with our facilities department, pulling together items for the concession stand and gathering volunteers, it was a full school community event.”
