Spring has Sprung!

At least it’s Spring here in Central Texas.

My family and friends in other parts of the country aren’t doing so well. I hear there are feet of snow falling in places I used to call home. I love how beautiful it looks after a snowstorm. I truly enjoy the snow for a week or so. But I must admit that I prefer a warmer clime with wildflowers blooming everywhere! And butterflies, I love watching all the colorful butterflies.

Silent Spring

The story behind the song!

https://youtu.be/cuLJKY7Wgh8

Published in 1962, Silent Spring, written by Rachel Carson, brought an end to the dangerous practice of widespread agricultural use of DDT to the forefront of our environmental conversations. Her work finally stopped DDT from being used throughout the world. In fact, I believe it was this book that awakened all of us to the need to protect our environment.

I read Silent Spring not too long after it was published, and it further opened my eyes to the beauty, wonder and fragility of life on this planet. It amazes me that, after all this time, we humans continue the practice of killing what we consider to be useless creatures while poisoning our food and the environment.

Fair warning This very sad futuristic song is written from the viewpoint of someone who has lived his whole life surrounded by birds and other wildlife only to witness the continual decline of numerous species. It speaks of a springtime when the insects and the birds that feed on them have totally disappeared.

Here is something to think about – What can you do to change the way you respond to the creatures who share their lives with us? If we don’t change our ways soon, I’m afraid the science fiction portrayed in this song will become a reality - Not for us but for our children’s children. That will be a sad day indeed.
