EASTER CHANGES EVERYTHING

During my childhood, my family would pack up the car every spring and travel to Missouri to spend a long Easter weekend at my aunt’s farm. That annual pilgrimage created some of my favorite childhood memories as we gathered with family that I deeply loved but didn’t get to see often. Missouri always promised warmer weather than Minnesota and we would fish and swim in a small lake on the farm. My sister and I would constantly be outside running around the farm, playing different kinds of games, chasing cattle, hiding in the woods, and creating scavenger hunts. I looked forward to it every year as the unofficial start of spring and when we returned home, it signaled that something was going to be different. Winter was over. The end of the school year would soon follow. Summer was coming fast.

While Easter doesn’t always come with warmer temperatures, especially after our mild (perhaps even balmy) winter, it does signal a change. Life is different after Easter. At least it should be. And the first Easter certainly signaled a big change for the first followers of Jesus. Before the disciples had encountered the risen Christ, they were all making plans to move on. Good Friday had brought about a predictable change as the world rejected Jesus. The disciples now thought their beloved teacher, leader and friend was gone. He had tried to change the world, but the world didn’t want to be changed, and so the world got rid of him. The mission was over, and it was now time to go back to their old lives of fishing and tax collecting. It was time to get back to the way things were before Jesus.

But then Easter happened. Maybe the world didn’t want to be changed, but that did not stop Jesus. Jesus refused to let death have the final say, Jesus returned to his disciples and followers because life was not over. And suddenly, everything had changed. Everything was going to be different.

In the coming weeks here at Vinje we will be exploring all the ways that our lives are different because of the empty tomb. Indeed, Easter changes everything. There is now a space for hope and faith no matter what challenges we might be facing. As we search our scriptures for what happened to the first followers of Jesus after Easter we will find that the promise of eternal life is far greater than fear and doubt. That God shows up when we least expect it. That the loving presence of Jesus is never far. Why? Because Easter changes everything!

UPCOMING SERMON SERIES

SUNDAYS APRIL 7-MAY 12

The empty tomb made a big impact on our world and on our lives. It truly changed everything. Join us on Sundays after Easter as we explore the scriptures to see the difference it made in the lives of Jesus and his followers.

WEDNESDAYS APRIL 3-17

Join us for our upcoming worship series, where we’ll ask big questions about Heaven. Don’t miss this opportunity to deepen your understanding of Jesus and delve into the Bible in search of insight into the mysteries of eternal life. We’ll explore these questions: Who is good enough? Who says Heaven is up? Who is right?

WEDNESDAYS APRIL 24-MAY15 Sometimes we get so focused on where we are going that we forget to notice the journey that we are on. We are all going somewhere in our lives as we move about from here to there. Likewise, our faith is a journey that is moving us forward. Focusing too much on the destination might mean that we miss the beauty of the journey that God has in store for us. Come hear more about how God wants us to live with more freedom, hope, life, love, and joy.

“The earth will not continue to offer its harvest, except with faithful stewardship. We cannot say we love the land and then take steps to destroy it for use by future generations.” John Paul ll

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” Margaret Mead

“Like music and art, love of nature is a common language that can transcend political or social boundaries.”

EXPLORING VINJE'S HISTORY

In April, we have the anniversary of two important walks in the history of Vinje. This month pastor Andrés has asked two of our members to share their memories about them.

On April 7, 1963–it was on Palm Sunday, the congregation gathered for the last service at the church in downtown at the corner of Becker Avenue and 5th Street and, after the service, our old sanctuary was ceremonially closed with the nailing of a Lenten Cross on the doors. The congregation then marched down 5th Street and Willmar Avenue to our current location.

Dan Kleven was part of that walk, and he remembers that “it was a cold and blustery day.” Dan continues,

“The procession started inside the old church with a short service and comments from the pastor. Then everyone assembled outside to begin the trek to the new church. The women wore long dress coats and the older women all had kerchiefs on. Some of the men wore car coats but most just wore suits. It seemed like a long march to us kids, but it probably only took about 40 minutes. Along the way, people visited about lots of different topics, but the new church was on everyone’s minds, and we were excited to get there. I remember that there was a dog that joined the procession and followed us all the way to the new church. When we arrived at the church, the congregation lined up for photos, and as I remember, the kids weren’t included in the picture taking. A few words were said by the pastor, and then everyone entered the church and proceeded into the narthex for more formalities and later a church service. The new Vinje Church was a different structure than the other churches in town and we all were so excited and proud to be members of our congregation, and nothing has changed in my mind after all these years.”

Fifty years later, on Saturday April 6, 2013, Vinje recreated that walk with what was called a “Jubilee Jaunt.” The congregation was invited to walk, run, or bike from Vinje Church on Willmar Avenue Southwest to the old Vinje site at the corner of 5th Street and Becker Avenue downtown, and back to the church. The old Vinje church building downtown was gone, but the building at 414 Becker Ave. that was once the church’s educational wing was still standing and is standing today. It was open for tours on that day.

Lynn Gatewood was part of the 2013 walk with her kids Max and Jackson, and she has these memories to share:

“In 2013, Max was in 4th grade, Jackson was a 1st grader, and I was a Sunday School teacher. We were encouraged to join the walk as a way of celebrating 50 years of Vinje. The boys were pretty young, so sharing a few pictures helped jog their memories. Max remembers wearing his favorite sweatshirt, singing the Jubilee song with Pastor Engholm, and the fun he had with his brother and his friend Logan. Jackson remembers the ‘why’ of the event. We were recreating the walk that our Vinje members took from the old church to the new. It was important to recognize our heritage and the evolution of our church.”
