Photofeature: Easter Egg Hunt Well-Attended Despite Wet Weather
A SusanvilleStuff Photofeature
by Marshel Couso
The Lassen County Fairgrounds were packed with kids and their families last Saturday for the annual Community Easter Egg Hunt and, despite a wet mix of slush and fresh snow, kids still had a blast searching for the 12,000 colorful plastic, candy-filled eggs.
Buckets were overflowing with candy and an enjoyable time was had by all despite the inclement weather.
It’s a big event which requires a lot of volunteer help. From the volunteers who showed up last week to stuff eggs with candy, to all the nice folks who showed up to help the Easter Bunny hide eggs Saturday morning, it was certainly a group effort by a lot of people.
Special mention, of course, should be made of Susanville’s Easter Bunny, Tina Jacobs. Also, thanks to Lassen County Fair Manager Kaitlyn Downing and her Junior Fair Board, without whom the event wouldn’t be possible.
The Easter Egg Hunt was sponsored by the Lassen County Office of Education, Guess Plumbing, Diamond Mountain Casino, Town and Country Real Estate, Lassen Community College, Wemple’s Pumpkin Patch, C&S Waste, City of Susanville Natural Gas Division, Forest Office Equipment, Susanville Supermarket IGA, Lassen Municipal Utility District, Menath Insurance, Golden One Credit Union, Lassen Foster Youth Services, City of Susanville Click and Fix, WFP Ship and Print, Merry Morsels, Banner Lassen Medical Center and the Lassen County Probation Department.

Lassen Family Services Raising Awareness with April 24th Denim Day Walk
April is sexual assault awareness month, and Denim Day, April 14th, is an international campaign to raise awareness and support survivors of sexual assault. Each year Lassen Family Services asks community members, elected officials, businesses and students to take a stand, by wearing denim as a visible means of protest against the misconceptions that surround sexual violence.”
Why denim? In Italy in the 1990’s, a young woman was raped by her driving instructor. The assailant was convicted and sentenced to jail, but on appeal the Italian Supreme Court dismissed all charges on the grounds that “because the victim wore very tight jeans, she had to help him remove them… and by removing the jeans… it was no longer rape but consensual sex.”
| |
|
Women of the Italian Legislature protested the decision by wearing jeans to work. As news of the decision spread, so did the protest. In April 1999, a social service agency in Los Angeles established the first Denim Day in the United States.
How you can help take a stand
This year the Denim Day walk will start at 2:00p.m. at the LFS office at 1306 Riverside Drive, travel down Main Street to Joe’s Coffee for a short break and then back to the LFS office.
You can show your support online by posting a picture of you wearing your denim to Facebook with the hastag #LFSDenimday2024. All online participants will be entered into a raffle.
For additional information about Denim Day or ways to help promote awareness about sexual assault, please contact call LFS at 1.530.257.4599.

Speed Boat is Used on Honey Lake
April 5, 1938
Last Sunday a speed boat plowed through the waters of Honey Lake for the first time in twenty years.
Howard Thornhill and John Berglund, owners of the boat, with Mrs. Berglund, Kenneth Doyle and Leon Millsap enjoyed a day of motorboat riding, traveling through all three different sections of the lake, which are connected by passageways. The boat is powered by an outboard motor.
Many boat enthusiasts are planning boating on Honey Lake. The lake has been dry for the past twenty years. The level of the lake is reported to be rising every day.
Ranchers who had fenced the lake bottom are having to remove their fences.
