Industry-Led Initiative to Build Pipeline of Ship Maintenance & Repair Workers

April is Second Chance Month, a national recognition of the importance of helping individuals, communities, and agencies across the country appreciate their role in supporting the safe and successful re-entry of millions of people returning from incarceration each year.

At the WDBCCC, we are proud to be a part of our pioneering Bay Area initiative designed to support this population and other under-served, under-resourced individuals while promoting economic growth.

The Working Waterfront Coalition (WWC) is an industry-led initiative that seeks to create a pathway for ship maintenance and repair workers, contributing to workforce development and community empowerment.

Day at the Capitol

WDBCCC staff LaTosha Stockholm and Jon Rodriguez went to the Capitol on March 6 to engage with key legislators and their dedicated staff, to help them understand the local impact of the proposed Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act Reauthorization. The areas of concern are the 50% training requirement for Adult and Dislocated Worker funds, the increase in Governor's reserve (up to 10%) for 'Critical Industries Fund', and the Redesignation language.

They also spotlighted our upcoming projects, including the Displaced Oil and Gas Workers program. They ensured lawmakers were kept in the loop, emphasizing the paramount importance of their support in driving our mission forward.

The day wasn’t just about meetings and discussions; it was about championing change, fostering growth, and making waves that ripple far beyond our county borders.

Martinez State of the City

The Martinez Chamber of Commerce and the City of Martinez hosted the State of the City on March 12. Mayor Brianne Zorn showcased the City’s direction, plans for upcoming projects, and vision for the future.

Tamia Brown, WDBCCC's Executive Director, was a guest speaker at this annual event.

The WDB supports businesses with their needs and provides programs that connect underserved communities with skills training and employment opportunities.

CWA Executive Bootcamp

WDB Team Members Michael Katz and LaTosha Stockholm took a quick trip to Sacramento recently, where they participated in a comprehensive full-day session of the California Workforce Association Executive Bootcamp.

This program, spanning a year, is tailored for workforce directors, deputy directors, and executive staff of workforce development boards. The primary aim of this intensive training is to cultivate the next generation of leaders within workforce systems.

Now in its 11th season, CWA's Executive Bootcamp trains participants like Katz and Stockholm to navigate the complexities of modern workforce management.
