Michigan Legislature considers bills to allow pharmacists to prescribe birth control

The Michigan Legislature is considering two bills that could make getting access to hormonal birth control a little easier.

"We find ourselves in an OB-GYN kind of desert," said state Rep. Stephanie Young, one of the bill sponsors. "They're becoming harder and harder to locate, and when we know that we have pharmacists just up the street."

The two House bills would allow pharmacists to prescribe certain hormonal birth control methods, like birth control pills or hormonal contraceptive patches. There wouldn't be your typical exam, but Young says that pharmacists will still advise about the medications.

Obesity-related kidney disease in childhood can lead to end-stage disease in adulthood

Obesity rates in children have surged over the last few decades. The latest data (2020) from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show 19.7% of U.S. children have obesity, translating to nearly 15 million children nationwide (http://dx.doi.org/10.15620/cdc:106273). This observed incidence of pediatric obesity may have worsened after the COVID-19 pandemic.

This statistic is concerning because obesity exerts a pervasive influence on various physiological body systems and has substantial consequences for short- and long-term health outcomes. In particular, the emergence of obesity-related kidney disease (ORKD) over the past few decades has aligned with the worsening obesity epidemic, magnifying the importance of addressing this as a significant public health concern.

AAP leaders call decision to pull harmful weighted sleep products a 'strong first step'

Several major retailers including Amazon, Target and Babylist announced they would stop selling weighted infant sleep products such as baby blankets, sleep sacks and swaddles.

The retailers’ decisions come after years of AAP advocacy, including publication of recommendations for safe sleep in 2022 outlining how weighted products are unsafe for infants and advising they not be placed on or near a sleeping infant.

“This is a strong first step, and infants deserve more,” said AAP President Benjamin D. Hoffman, M.D., FAAP. “Exhausted parents shouldn’t have to become part-time product safety regulators, but our current system forces them to by allowing infant products onto the market without evidence they are safe. We need a proactive approach that keeps infants safe and gives parents the peace of mind they deserve.”

New Detroit clinic aims to shape infant mental health

The clinic is a partnership between the Wayne State University School of Social Work, which offers specialized training in infant mental health, and Wayne Pediatrics, a health center staffed by clinicians from the university’s nearby medical school.

Early intervention, here and now, could be key in curbing at least some mental health crises in the years to come in Michigan, where the behavioral health system for years has been overwhelmed and understaffed.
