You Dream It, ASOP Students Will Build It

ASOP has seen its share of construction projects this year and last, with teacher Tony leading the way. Bee hive boxes and picnic tables immediately come to mind.

More recently, Tony's two STEAM classes have been constructing various shelving units to help organize Joy's art room. You can also find his students inside her supply closet, cleaning it out and expanding it.

All this construction requires tools - lots of them - and a place to store them. An office supply closet, conveniently located next to Tony's classroom, is being revamped for just such a use.

Students are required to pass safety training in order to use certain tools such as the miter and table saw. For many of them, it's their first experience building something with their own two hands.

Special Speaker Visits History of Animated Film Class

Mindy, ASOP's College and Career Coordinator, spoke to Sarah's History of Animated Film class last month about her time working for Disney Feature Animation in Burbank, California.

Mindy was a Legal Administrator for the Vice President of Business and Legal Affairs, and also worked on several animated films. She even has name credit for the film "Atlantis"!

The students really enjoyed seeing Mindy's one-year jacket, two-year Mickey Mouse pin, and all of the flyers and invites to the exclusive events she attended. "It was so fun working there and, yes, we had famous people on the Burbank lot all of the time," she related.

In this middle school elective class, students are watching movies from the different Ages of Disney. They began with "Snow White," representing the Golden Age, and are currently watching "The Reluctant Dragon" from the Package Era. According to Sarah, "We discuss story elements, how animation technology has changed over time, how events in the world had an impact on animation, and how animation had an impact on the world!"

Spring Chicks on the Horizon

After turning on the incubator and letting it warm up for a day, students in Liz's Biology classes recently set nine eggs in it. During the incubation period, which averages 21 days, the students will periodically candle the eggs to check on them. Candling involves shining a light through an egg's shell to see inside it and to observe the growth and development of the embryo.

A baby chick will use its egg tooth to peck its way through the egg shell, a process that only takes a few minutes. When hatching is imminent, Liz will set up a live feed on YouTube that lasts 24 hours, so anyone can watch overnight.

Once hatched, the chicks will live in Liz's classroom for about one week before going home with her or being adopted. Fluffy baby chicks are always a big hit at ASOP!
