The Indigenous Student Circles (ISC) have met many times throughout the 2023-2024 school year. Students have had the opportunity to meet Indigenous community members, including authors, chefs and artists.

Upcoming Events

15th Annual Métis Heritage Celebration

The Métis Nation of Ontario, Oshawa and Durham Region Métis Council, present the 15th Annual Métis Heritage Celebration on Saturday, June 22, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Camp Samac (275 Conlin Rd E, Oshawa).


This is a free family event to celebrate and experience Métis culture, featuring Indigenous vendors and food, Métis cultural activities and musical artists.

Turtle Island Camp for Youth

Students 9 - 13 years of age are invited to attend Turtle Island Camp at Ontario Tech University from July 22 - 26, 2024.


This Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) camp is designed to uncover and explore the relationship between STEAM, Indigenous peoples, and the land. Read the flyer to learn more.

Durham Community Health Centre - Indigenous Family Night Program

Hosted by Durham Community Health Centre, Indigenous Family Night is open to First Nation, Inuit, Métis peoples, and their families.


Join to share food, Indigenous knowledge, culture, and experiences, with programs for all ages, 0-6, 7-12, 13-17, and 18+. 


  • Dates: Wednesdays until June 12, 2024
  • Time: 5:00 - 7:30 p.m.
  • Location: Durham Community Health Centre (115 Grassmere Ave. Oshawa, Ontario)

DCDSB Indigenous Education Resources and Ancestry Self-Identification

Indigenous students and their families are welcome to review the new digital post card for information on how to self-identify Indigenous ancestry. The Indigenous Education team is excited to share culturally relevant information and supports for Indigenous students.

Bank of Canada Scholarship Award for Secondary Students

The Bank of Canada is awarding an $8,000 scholarship to assist students who are Indigenous, LGBTQ2S+, Francophone, have a disability, or those who identify as a member of a visible minority group or racialized group to help remove barriers to education and support greater diversity in the workforce.


To be considered for this scholarship, you must:

  • Be enrolled in a post-secondary institution for Fall 2024.
  • Pursuing post-secondary studies, either full-time or part-time, and in a related field to the Bank's work such as finance and economics, administration and operations, or information technology and cyber security.
  • Have an overall average grade of 70 percent or higher.


The deadline for application is May 26, 2024.

James Bartleman Indigenous Youth Creative Writing Awards

The James Bartleman Indigenous Youth Creative Writing Award commemorates the legacy of Ontario’s 27th Lieutenant Governor by recognizing up to six Indigenous students for their creative writing talent. Each recipient receives a $2,500 award.


A junior student (12 years old and younger) and a senior student (13 to 18 years old) is chosen from each of the following geographic categories:

  • fly-in community
  • on reserve
  • off reserve (do not live in a fly-in community or on a reserve)


The deadline for application is May 31, 2024.

The Augustin Family Scholarship for Dreamers

Applications are now open for the Augustin Family Scholarship for Dreamers. This scholarship is open to Black, Indigenous and racialized students in Grade 12 attending a Durham Region high school who will begin full-time post-secondary studies in Fall 2024. Two individual awards of $1000 each will be granted by the Augustin family in partnership with the Durham Community Foundation.


This scholarship supports the development of BIPOC youth leaders who are willing to dream big. Their leadership can be quiet or loud and demonstrated through actions that impact their families/friends, schools, and/or community. The awards will celebrate the excellence, leadership and unlimited potential of Black, Indigenous and racialized youth in Durham Region. Read the flyer for more information.
