Dean's Update: Celebrating Drexel's 125th Anniversary
The celebration of the founding of Drexel - 125 years ago, on December 17, 1891 - has begun. In preparation for this significant milestone, President Fry commissioned the creation of a book about Drexel's history, looking both at the University and at the city of Philadelphia. Building Drexel: The University and Its City, 1891-2016 was co-edited by Drexel faculty Scott Knowles and Richardson Dilworth and will be released in time for the celebration kickoff next month.
The Drexel Libraries, and particularly its Archives, has been instrumental in supporting the preparation of this history book. Over the past year, researchers and students working under the direction of the book's editors have visited the Archives looking for publications, documents, images, artifacts and other records to use in preparing their chapters.
Engineering Academic Challenge
How can play be transformed into learning? The Hagerty Library's Data Visualization Zone has recently hosted three "Engineering Academic Challenge" events that have sought to answer this very question. Developed entirely by six Drexel engineering students and Liaison Librarian for Engineering Jay Bhatt, the Engineering Academic Challenge is a game centered around trans-disciplinary themes that is now being played by people around the world.
Professional Development in the Libraries
At the Libraries, professional development means following that thread of a question about where your career is leading you and how learning new skills can benefit your daily work. For Anita Lai, the Libraries' archives technician, it meant being trained in emergency response and networking with regional Pennsylvania institutions.
