Paideia at Tulsa Classical Academy
I recently gave a tour of Tulsa Classical Academy to a superintendent from another school district. The thing that stood out to him the most was that TCA did not use computers in the classroom. He was genuinely baffled that we did not use technology. He went on to discuss the importance of using devices in school. He pulled out his phone to illustrate the abundant information that was available to him at a moment's notice. His school district is one-to-one, in which every student has their own mobile computing device (computer, netbook, tablet, etc.). Additionally, students in his district are allowed to use their phones during the school day for “educational purposes.”

My response to the suggestion that TCA should become one-to-one is that our focus is the relationship between the teacher and the student and that using computers would prevent that from happening. We believe that nothing can replace the virtue and knowledge the teachers share with the students on a daily basis. Children need interaction with great people filled with passion, morality, and wisdom. Our teachers do not just impart knowledge; they serve as role models for our students. Our teachers are experts at what they do. They know and practice sound pedagogy. They are making a positive impact on the lives of our students every day. TCA teachers push students to do their best and live virtuously. No electronic devices can do that.

We also believe there are several benefits to using paper and pencil in the classroom. New research studies reveal that students who use paper and pencil for math outperform their peers who use digital tools. Paper and pencil also provide students with fewer distractions and help them stay focused. Additionally, students can better process information when they write it down on paper.

Our response to the argument that we must prepare students for work in the 21st century by using computers is that a person trained to think well will be more valuable to the workforce than someone trained for computer use. Additionally, we believe a large amount of computer time harms children's social, emotional, and physical development. Tulsa Classical Academy is committed to ensuring that no device, program, or system will ever replace our wonderful teachers and simple paper and pencil.

Re-Enrollment
We are working diligently with SchoolMint to get our re-enrollment up and running. Updating your student's information does not re-enroll them for the upcoming school year.
We will let you know as soon as we have the issue resolved. Thank you very much for your patience and understanding. We want you to know that your enrollment is our priority. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact enrollment@tulsaclassical.org.
We would like to thank Ms. Freeman and Ms. Gill for all the hard work and time they put into TCA's first Christmas Program! A special thanks also goes out to everyone who volunteered time and creative energy to help make it all come together. The students did a wonderful job and we are so proud of their beautiful performance!
