VOLUNTEER Magazine

As the Spring 2024 Flight Edition issue is about to go to press, a limited number of boxes of the Fall 2023 issue of Civil Air Patrol Volunteer magazine remain available. The Fall issue (below left) has considerable cadet-centric content, including the cover story written by cadets. Volunteer tells a broad CAP story (for youth and adults alike) that makes a great piece to distribute at open houses and events. If you have a flight school in your area, drop off a few copies and check back periodically to see if more are needed. You could even consider adding a QR code sticker to the cover for your unit’s website or social media. Send your requests to this email with “Magazine Request” in your subject line. There are 80 magazines in a box they fly off the rack at flight schools.

Report to Congress

The MAC team also has printed Reports to Congress (above right), Fact Sheets, and folders available for wings’ 2024 legislative efforts. Please order in increments of 50 by sending your request to this email with “NLD Products” as the subject line. Remember to include a shipping address in the email.

Leg Day Recap

More than 400 members, from every CAP wing, participated in National Legislative Day meetings at congressional offices Feb. 29 at the U.S. Capitol. During the month-long hybrid/in-person campaign, CAP members met with a record number of offices — 524 so far, 98% of Congress. Last year, the figure was 96%.

The meetings are critical to gaining support for CAP’s annual budget request. Members of Congress were recognized for their past service and contributions, including retiring Sens. Joe Manchin (at left in photo) and Tom Carper (not shown). Both supported CAP while in Congress, with Manchin serving as commander of the Congressional Squadron. Carper was a CAP cadet in his youth.

Website Unification

So far, 20 wings have begun work on their new wing websites as part of the Wing Website Unification Project. The updated Oklahoma Wing website is live and is our model site. See the project timeline to confirm your wing’s upcoming deliverable dates.

Have questions? Information about the Wing Website Unification Project can be found on the CAP Websites page on GoCivilAirPatrol.com. This page includes links to the directions to make updates to your website(s) in SiteViz, several tutorials, a short training video from Global Reach, recordings from the update meetings in September, and FAQs for the project.

Does your wing have multiple unit (squadron/group) pages to create? See the updated Oklahoma Wing website the top section of the squadron page is unique to the squadron. Below that is identical content that can be copied and then pasted into each squadron page via the source code, recreating graphic placements, table setups, video links, etc. This method eliminates the need to build multiple individual pages. These pages serve as recruitment pages for the squadrons. Each squadron has a short redirect in SiteViz — in this example, okwg.cap.gov/jenks. This is the perfect short name for business cards, etc.

Also, if the wing has a group structure, this can be incorporated into the left navigation on the Locations page. It's not required, but optional. On the main Locations page:

  • Groups must be labeled by geographic area or other description, not just a group number. If you include a group number, it must come after the group name.
  • On the main locations page, consider including a map that illustrates the boundaries where each group is located in the state.
  • The group listing in the left navigation should link to a new group page that includes a map of all the squadrons in the group.
  • Indent the individual squadrons in the left navigation as child pages under the Group Name. If you include charter numbers, they must come after the squadron name.

If you have questions, send them to capwebsites@capnhq.gov.
