Changing Lives Reception

History Corner

D-Day was of unprecedented scale. The allied forces’ staggering operation involved the coordinated efforts of more than 155,000 troops supported by 11,500 aircraft, and 6,900 naval vessels in an assault on five Normandy beachheads: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword. Integral to its success were years of planning, intelligence gathering, and deception campaigns, as well as the courage of the thousands of brave men that stormed the beaches that day.

International collaboration was crucial to the allied victory. While most of the personnel that landed in Normandy on D-Day were from the UK, the United States, and Canada, a significant number from Australia, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, France, Greece, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, and Poland also took part in the Normandy Campaign.

We are looking for experienced Scouts to lead a song or two during the Normandy campfire on Saturday at 16:00!

We are asking the Scoutmasters and Advisors to first approve the Scout and song/skit, then please forward to Misty Springer.

Maisy Battery

The Maisy Battery was a group of artillery batteries constructed by the Wehrmacht near Grandcamp-Maisy and formed part of the Atlantic Wall defenses in Normandy. One battery consisted of four 105mm canons (three were in casemates the other in an open field position). Another battery 300 yards away consisted of six 155mm First World War French howitzers, a 76mm Russian howitzer, two 50mm KwK anti-tank canons, dozens of bunkers and an extensive trench network. The site was also the regional headquarters for the sector and contained the safe for the German payroll with $4.2 million dollars worth of French Franc being found in a safe when captured. Today you can explore 2 1/2 miles of German trenches and enter many bunkers and shelters. Although none of the original guns are on site the gun pits now house guns of a similar size which visitors are allowed to view up close.

Omaha Beach Memorial Museum

The Omaha Beach Memorial Museum was built on the grounds of the American naval landing of June 6, 1944, 200 meters from Omaha beach. The museum covers a surface area of 1,400 m² and presents a large collection of uniforms, personal items, weapons and military vehicles. Also included is a cinema room where visitors can discover a 25-minute documentary film. All the exhibits displayed belonged to soldiers of WWII.
