Gypsy

Tryon Little Theater’s big musical of the season is “Gypsy”, playing for two weekends at the Tryon Fine Arts Center, February 28 – March 2, and March 7 – 9. Lyrics are by Stephen Sondheim, with music by Jule Styne, and book by Arthur Laurents.

“Gypsy” has often been called the greatest American musical by many critics and writers, and is loosely based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, whose mother, Rose, is the “ultimate show-biz Mom” determined to raise two daughters to be on the stage. Winner of numerous Tony awards, Drama Desk awards, and a Laurence Olivier award, “Gypsy” brings us songs like “Let me Entertain You”, and “Everything Coming up Roses!” The New York Times has described the show as "a wrenching fable…yet also a showcase for one classic song and rousing vaudeville routine after another."

Directed by Laura Depta Peal, with Musical Director Pam McNeil, tickets are $30 for adults and $15 for those under 18. Tickets can be purchased online at www.tltinfo.org, or by calling TLT at 828-859-2466.

Sister City’s New Board

Saluda Sister City held its annual Board meeting in December and welcomed a new Board Member, Nancy Miller. New officers are Susan Cannon, Chair; Ellen Rogers, Chair-Elect; Nancy Miller, Secretary, with Debi Thomas as her assistant. The Board is soliciting a bookkeeper to work with the Treasurer who is still to be elected.

A Ten-Year Milestone.

Saluda first connected with Carunchio in 2014 when 10 citizens of Saluda happened there on a visit to the Palazzo Tour D’Eau cooking and touring program. Bevie Hardy was on the trip and came up with the idea of us becoming “Sister Cities.”   In 2015, the two towns officially became Sister Cities with endorsements from their governing bodies and approval of Sister Cities International.  We’ll be celebrating this year and renewing our efforts to bring new cultural experiences to our townspeople and students and to connect with and support Carunchio and its elementary school students.

Saluda Community Table (SCT)

Cooking is more about following your heart than following recipes

Are you a foodie? Do you love to cook? Do you have a special dish everyone raves about? Then you have an invitation to share your passion and cook a meal or dessert for the Saluda Community Table! It’s great fun and rewarding plus we believe that the love you put into a meal is just as important as the ingredients you use.

To give you some ideas of what you might like to cook, last year our guests were treated to Italian, Costa Rican, Irish, German, and Mexican dishes. Other crowd favorites included a chili cookoff, BBQ, casseroles, a low country shrimp boil, and hotdogs on the grill. We celebrated summer with a memorable farm to table country supper. Theme-based events like our Western Cowboy Supper have gained popularity, and there is always a vegetarian choice. Several businesses and organizations graciously provided meals including Saluda Sister City, On Track Saluda, and the Saluda Community Land Trust.

Curious about how to participate? It’s best to have a small team to cook, the menu can be as simple or elaborate as you like, and you have access to the Community Center kitchen, or you can prep and cook at home. We feed an average of 125 happy guests on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month. A reimbursement is offered to cover the cost of ingredients up to $3.50 per person while some groups choose to cover the food costs.

Hopefully, you’ve already got an delicious idea for a meal or dessert you would love to cook for your Saluda neighbors or perhaps you’d like to volunteer in some other way! Just do it! Send an email to Charlotte Lovett (clovett5987@gmail.com) and she will answer all your questions and get you on our 2025 calendar.

Our next meals are January 14 and 28 from 5:30 – 7pm at the Saluda Senior Center—meals are always free with donations gladly accepted.

Bon Appetite!
