Celebrate Sunday Mass at St. Alphonsus!

Hello St. Alphonsus,

In this Sunday's Gospel, Jesus is sentenced to death and crucified. The centurion who witnessed his death declared, “This man was the Son of God.” For Palm Sunday background, please read more here.

Daily prayer keeps you in good relationship with the LORD, and yourself.

Mass Readings for Palm Sunday

March 24 Parish Bulletin

Men's Evening Prayer Group (Vespers) continues on Wednesdays from 8:15 to 9 PM in the chapel.

Praise and Adoration- Friday, March 22 at 7:30 PM

This Friday, spend time with our Lord in praise and adoration in the church. We'll spend the first 15 minutes in silent adoration, and then our musicians will lead worship in song. Confession will also be available! If you haven't had a chance to receive the sacrament of Reconciliation this Lent, this is a great way to enter into Holy Week. The hour will conclude with benediction, and our Young Adult Ministry will lead a group for fellowship at Olive Black after!

Volunteer Opportunities- Cleaning Angels Ministry- Triduum Cleaning and Decoration

We need your help to clean and decorate the church for Easter! Please sign up here to volunteer after 8:30 AM Saturday morning Mass for either March 23rd or March 30th. If all the signup slots for your designated date and group are filled, but you still want to help, please feel free to still come! The number listed for each group is the minimum amount of people needed.

**AACA families- This activity counts towards required volunteer hours**

We need a lot of people for this, so please don't wait for someone else to sign up! Help create a beautiful and welcoming church this Easter!

Volunteer as a Greeter/Usher for Holy Week

St. Alphonsus is in need of additional ushers for the Easter Triduum liturgies. Ushers help out at Mass by serving as greeters, assisting in taking up the collection, passing out bulletins, and picking up left behind music sheets/bulletins in the pews after Mass. It is that simple! In many ways, the ushers are the “face” of the church, the first ones the faithful see when they arrive for worship and the last ones they see as they leave. It is important that an usher be friendly, honest, and willing to serve. There will be a sign-up sheet on the main table in the narthex. We appreciate your help!! Contact Head Usher John Meindl for any questions.

March Madness Watch Party This Saturday!

Everybody loves March Madness! We will be showing multiple games for the March Madness basketball tournament this Saturday, March 23rd from 1 PM-5 PM in the parish Festival Hall. We have included a spreadsheet here for Food/Drinks sign up but feel free to bring a dish, snack, or dip to share with the other members of the St. Al’s YAM community.

St. Vincent de Paul Society Chapter at St. Alphonsus

The collection on Holy Thursday each year goes towards those making a difference and helping the homeless and those down on their luck in the Lakeview area, offering hope to the most vulnerable when they have no place else to turn. Upon entering our church, you likely have seen the clothing/food donation bins in the vestibules. Our rectory office also gives out sandwiches to those in need during business hours. Please be generous in your support at the 7 PM Mass on Holy Thursday. You can also make an online donation towards our SVdP chapter here.

Talk with Father Pat Gorman

Why was the priesthood established? Are priests necessary?

Join our Young Adult Ministry on Wednesday, March 27 for a talk from Fr. Pat Gorman which will explore the origins and meaning of the priesthood and the Last Supper.

Light refreshments will be available in Festival Hall and the talk will begin a little after 7 PM. Join us for Mass and Eucharistic Adoration beforehand.

Prior to entering the seminary, Fr. Pat Gorman worked in the fields of computer science and poverty alleviation. His professional career took a circuitous route and eventually led him to the discernment of the priesthood. He entered Mundelein seminary in 2014 and was ordained to the priesthood in 2020. His first assignment was here at St. Alphonsus, where he spent three happy years. This past July, he was assigned to Mundelein Seminary as the Director of Chicago Seminarians and Director of the Spirituality Year. His current ministry involves working with seminarians in the preparation for the priesthood.

This event is free of charge; goodwill donations accepted. Contact for more information.

Lent 2024

“Lent is a new beginning, a path leading to the certain goal of Easter, Christ’s victory over death. This season urgently calls us to conversion. Christians are asked to return to God ‘with all their hearts’ (Joel 2:12), to refuse to settle for mediocrity and grow in friendship with the Lord.” – Pope Francis.

The Archdiocese of Chicago is delighted to provide the faithful with a wide variety of opportunities to take Pope Francis’ words to heart and begin a Lenten mission of deepening relationships with those around them and with Jesus Christ. Access more resources here!

What is CRS Rice Bowl? CRS Rice Bowl is the official Lenten program of Catholic Relief Services, working to end hunger in our local communities and across the globe. You can support the collection by grabbing a Rice Bowl container at Mass, filling it with your change/bills and returning to St. Alphonsus by Holy Thursday.

Come as you are. You are welcome here. Make authentic connections with

other women! Refuel and Refresh! Learn more about God!

The Touching the Divine Bible study focuses on qualities of Jesus revealed through the Gospel of John. This study draws us into a deeper loving relationship with Jesus as we reflect on His life and personality.

Saint John referred to himself as “the disciple whom Jesus loved,” and as we study, John will teach is how much Jesus loves us and how His love is the true satisfaction of our souls.

What you have been given was meant to be shared - Fr. Derek Ho, Pastor, Mary, Seat of Wisdom Parish

On the Discipleship Pathway, one of the stages is “Encounter” – a term used to describe those moments when we meet the living Christ in a life-changing way, coming to know God’s love and that Jesus is actively present in our lives.

Maybe you have experienced a personal encounter with Christ but don’t know how to share that with others. Or, if you haven’t, you yearn for such an encounter and struggle to talk about that desire. In either instance, it is important to invite the Holy Spirit to come and guide us in our conversations.

Each of us individually, and as parish families, are at different places on our discipleship pathway. So let us pray for one another that we might recognize moments of encounter with Christ and know how to invite others to join us on the journey.

Safe Families for Children

Safe Families "Lenten Blessing Bags" are back!!! When a child arrives at a SFFC Host Family's home, they often don't come with much... maybe an extra outfit or two, but rarely anything beyond that.

While our wonderful SFFC Resource Closet in Festival Hall already has "the basics" clothes and books for these kids, we would also LOVE to provide the child and host family with a "Blessing Bag" to make the child feel extra loved and welcome... and to save the host family an expensive last-minute trip to Target!

Donation Wishlist (scroll to the bottom for "Blessing Bags" section):

Items are due to the Parish Office by Good Friday 3/29! Thank you for your generosity!

Encountering Christ in Daily Prayer April 13

Following last fall’s Archdiocesan Day of Renewal, the Archdiocese is hosting an event open to all on Saturday, April 13 – “Encountering Christ in Daily Prayer” – at St. Raymond de Peñafort in Mount Prospect. The day will include:

  • Prayer as a means to encounter Christ personally.
  • How to identify your personal prayer style and build a daily habit of prayer.
  • How to help create a parish culture of prayer.
  • How to tap into the power of intercessory prayer to fuel the mission of the Church.
  • Methods for leading group prayer that create space for an encounter with Christ

The day will be facilitated by Josh Danis, Director of Diocesan and Parish Engagement for Hallow, the #1 Catholic meditation and prayer app in the U.S. Parishioners, clergy and staff of the Archdiocese are all welcome but registration is required. Cost is $20 per person. Click here to register and feel free to share this opportunity with others.

Our weekly bulletin features many of the ways you can contribute to the vibrancy of St. Alphonsus parish.
