Community Stakeholder Group Announced

The District is pleased to announce the names of residents who will be serving on the Shaker Schools Facilities Advisory Committee. The list of committee members can be found here.

The committee held its first meeting Monday, December 4, at the Shaker Heights Public Library.

The committee is a stakeholder group that will help shape and guide implementation of the Long-Term Master Facilities Plan, provide community feedback as the District works to implement the Master Facilities Plan and engage with the broader community regarding the implementation of the plan.

The group consists of more than 30 members, approximately half chosen by lottery from the 85 residents who applied to serve. The remaining half were appointed by the District and Board of Education to ensure equitable demographic and geographic representation. The committee plans to meet monthly.

Middle Years / Primary Years Working Groups

Internal staff working groups to help plan for the transition to a 6-8 middle years building and K-5 elementary school buildings have recently been formed. These working groups will begin reviewing and discussing curricular programming and staffing needs for the expanded elementary grade band and will help to determine 6th grade swing space needs and plans during the Woodbury renovation process.

These groups include teachers, instructional coaches, International Baccalaureate coordinators, special education instructors, school counselors and others. The middle years group is being led by Woodbury Principal Eric Forman. The K-5 group is being led by Mercer Principal Roneisha Campbell.

Ludlow School Building Renovation Updates

A team of architects from the GPD Group, the firm handling design and architectural services on the Ludlow School renovation project, made a presentation to the Board of Education on Tuesday, December 5. The group is working on a design to transform Ludlow into a PreK complex. The group’s presentation can be viewed here.

Additionally, the Board approved hiring Gilbane Building Co. as Construction Manager At Risk (CMAR) for the project. The pre-construction services contract, not to exceed $50,000, will enable Gilbane to perform the preliminary work necessary to determine a Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) for the project. Once the GMP is determined, an additional resolution to proceed will come before the Board.

District Meets with Ohio Facilities Construction Commission

On Wednesday, December 6, the District hosted a Kickoff Meeting with representatives from the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission (OFCC). The meeting was intended to introduce the OFCC team that will be working on implementing the District’s Masters Facilities Plan.

Throughout the facilities planning process, the District has been working with the OFCC to secure co-funding for a Master Facilities Plan, which stands at 37 percent for eligible portions of the project. After voter approval of a bond issue to fund Segment One of the plan, the District and OFCC have been meeting to determine next steps.

During the session, District representatives were able to meet with Project Manager Dennis Kaplan. The OFCC assigned Mr. Kaplan to serve as Project Manager because of his vast experience on school construction projects throughout the state.

Securing the state funding will allow the District and OFCC to move forward with the hiring process for an architect and Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) for the project in the near future. Representatives from both the District and the OFCC will lead the interview process for these two positions.

Superintendent Updates Staff on Facilities Process

Superintendent Dr. David Glasner has been visiting all District school buildings to provide faculty and staff with updates regarding the implementation of the District facilities plan. The conversations are taking place at every school through January.

Dr. Glasner kicked off the visits with stops at Onaway Elementary School on Monday, December 4, and to Lomond Elementary School on Tuesday, December 5. This week, he will visit Woodbury Elementary School and Fernway Elementary School. Visits to the Middle School, Mercer Elementary School, Boulevard Elementary School and the High School will take place over the coming weeks.

Goals of the visits include:

  • Sharing tentative timelines and logistics about construction and renovation work
  • Gathering feedback from faculty and staff, answering questions and addressing concerns
