Crosswinds Newsletter
May 1, 2024 - Volume 719
| |
The month of May always carries with it a full slate of festivities in the life of the church. From our confirmands to mothers on Mothers’ Day to Pentecost Sunday, each week brings something new to celebrate. This Sunday we will be receiving our confirmation class.
Confirmation has a long tradition in the church. In the earliest days of the church, converts would undergo a three-year process called catechumenate. This was a time of intense study and deep reflection upon what it means to follow Jesus. At that time, converts prepared to leave behind pagan ways in order to fully dedicate themselves to the Lord. At Easter vigil, they committed themselves to Christ as the church welcomed them into Christian community.
While the practice of confirmation has evolved over the years, the heart of it is the same. The church gives our young people the space and resources necessary to dive deeper into the faith we share. All of this culminates in the opportunity to profess faith in Jesus publicly before the church, be baptized or remember their baptism, and join the church family as full members.
On Sunday, our church will witness the work that God has been doing in the lives of our confirmands. We will also have the opportunity to receive them into the body of Christ. As we witness their professions of faith and dedication of themselves to the Lord, the church is also to be mindful of our own need to give ourselves again to the Lord. What an exciting time for our church family!
We invite you to join us for the confirmation service this Sunday at 11:00 AM. We will be combining both late services in the Family Life Center for this important Sunday in the life of our church.
Also, if you have yet to be baptized and would like to be baptized as a sign of your faith in Christ and commitment to Him, please reach out to me this week. After our confirmands are baptized, we will set aside time for others in the church to be baptized by either sprinkling or full immersion. This is a wonderful opportunity to take that step of faith if you haven’t taken it before. Don’t miss it! Email me at bradyj@fmcmidlothian.org if you are interested or have any questions.
