Women’s Wisdom Walks Returns on May 1

Spring is here and it’s time to get outside!

The women of St. Thomas meet at the Sun Valley Post Office on Wednesday mornings at 9:00 a.m. and walk to the Hemingway Memorial while sharing our ideas on the topic of the day, and whatever else strikes our fancy.

It’s a great way to get your steps in and deepen friendships. Put on your walking shoes and invite a friend!

Community Urgent Needs Fund

For many years St. Thomas has made small grants to people in our community who find themselves in “urgent need,” whether for a utility or medical bill, a month’s rent, or a car repair. These requests come to us from St. Luke’s, which screens the recipients. Payments are made directly to the utility, landlord or other creditor.

A few years ago, a young working mother was awarded one of these grants, and she came by the church office to pick up the check that would bring her rent current. As she was leaving the building I caught up with her and asked if I could give her a blessing. Tears sprang to her eyes as she nodded, and I said a prayer and blessed her and her children and sent her out feeling, I hope, a little bit lighter. I was so grateful for the generosity of this parish and this fund that allows us to extend the love of God well beyond our usual church community.

If you would like to make a gift to support this ministry, please write a check to St. Thomas and note “Community Urgent Needs” in the memo field. Thank you.

Spring is here! And we are excited to bring back the Garden Angels ministry at St Thomas!

Join other men and women on Thursday mornings at 9:00am starting May 9th to work together for an hour or so maintaining our beautiful garden beds in the front of the church. No garden experience necessary…just a smiling face! Iced tea and lemonade will be provided!

And no need to commit to every Thursday. Even if you could join us for one gathering this summer, it would be much appreciated.

If you are interested or have any questions, please email Margot Shuford at r_shufor@bellsouth.net or call 404-293-0237.

We’ll put together a schedule after we hear from folks. Thank you!

ESL Class

Beginning on May 2, St. Thomas will host a weekly evening English as a Second Language (ESL) class. This class is designed to serve those in the north valley who work during the day. The class will be facilitated by Jose Valera, an experienced leader of ESL classes and a life coach. Jose is a paraprofessional at Hemingway School in Ketchum, where he has assisted in the English Language Development department since August 2023.

The classes will be held on Thursdays from 7-8 PM in Classroom One.

In order to ensure that our facilities are properly managed, we will need volunteers to be available on site during the class to help resolve any facility issues. If you are able to assist in this project, please contact Stefanie (stefanie@stthomassv.org) in the church office to sign up.

Book Club

Our last meeting for the school year is May 13th at 1pm in the parish hall of St. Thomas. We will be discussing the best seller, The Women by Kristin Hannah. This book has received almost a full 5 star rating by Good Reads. Your Book Club Readers who have already read the book agreed you must be sure to have a box of tissues next to you as you read the book. A warning, the book may be hard to find. On Amazon the hardcover is available for $18.99, and you can download it for $14.99.
