English majors enjoy employment rates and peak salaries like those of college graduates of all majors, according to a new report from the Modern Language Association’s Association of Departments of English (ADE). Despite the pervasive myth that English majors have limited career prospects, Dr. Gordon Tapper, Professor of English at LaGuardia, says the “Report on English Majors’ Career Preparation and Outcomes,” concludes that English majors find jobs and earn good salaries. Dr. Tapper recently served as a member of the ADE Ad Hoc Committee on English Major’s Career Preparation and Outcomes who wrote the report release in late March. Dr. Tapper joined Dr. Rachel Arteaga, Associate Director, Simpson Center for the Humanities, University of Washington; Dr. Jacqueline Jenkins, Professor of English from the University of Calgary; Dr. Peter Joseph Kalliney, Professor of English from the University of Kentucky; and Dr. Jené Schoenfeld, Professor of English from Kenyon College.

LaGuardia Professors Elected to University Faculty Senate
Congratulations to newly elected University Faculty Senators Charles Keyes (Library) and Lloyd Klein (Social Sciences), and Alternate Senators Faith Armstrong (Health Sciences) and Eric Conte (Education and Language Acquisition). Senators, who are elected for three-year terms, represent their colleges in university-wide deliberations. Alternate senators are elected for one-year terms. As the faculty governance body of CUNY, the University Faculty Senate works with senior or central administration to develop and implement CUNY’s Strategic Plan; make recommendations on CUNY policies, procedures, and personnel—and inform faculty of any changes; and foster communication transparency and reciprocity between the faculty and the administration. The University Faculty Senate is made up of nearly 140 elected delegates from 20 CUNY campuses; it is led by an elected executive committee and comprised of approximately 30 subcommittees. Dr. Rochell Isaac (English), president of LaGuardia’s Faculty Council, urges faculty to get involved in governance and to run for the positions when opportunities arise.

English Professor Bijoyeta Das Awarded CUNY Interdisciplinary Research Grant for Student Storytelling Institute
Professor Bijoyeta Das (English) and Dr. Tram Nguyen of Hostos Community College were one of seven interdisciplinary teams, out of 44 applications, awarded 2024 grants from the CUNY Interdisciplinary Research Grant program. They will use their $45,000 grant to organize a student storytelling institute. Five students each from LaGuardia and Hostos will receive training in multimedia documentation, oral history and storytelling. “The goal is to promote intergenerational dialogue and spark public conversations through stories about boundary crossing,” said Prof. Das. “We describe crossing as both physical, such as borders, but also metaphorical, such as crossing cultural taboos, overcoming economic limitations and upward mobility.” The students will create exhibits based on their work, which will be showcased this fall both digitally and in physical locations. Please share this opportunity with students. Each participant will receive a $1,000 stipend. Click here for the application form. With questions, contact Professor Das at bdas@lagcc.cuny.edu.
Students, Faculty and Staff Select “LaGuardia Community Greenway” as the name of the 29th Street Space; 2024 Programming Begins May 1 with Cinco de Mayo Celebration
For the past two years, LaGuardia Community College has used various names to identify the open street on 29th Street, such as "LaGuardia Community Greenway," "The Plaza," and "La Plaza." Earlier this month, the college community was asked to select one of the three names used or suggest the official name of the 29th Street space. There were 353 votes in total with 41% voting for “LaGuardia Community Greenway” 14% for “The Plaza” and 24% for “La Plaza.” There were also 77 write-in votes. LaGuardia Encourages College Community to Participate in National Denim Day, April 24
|
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and a time to practice solidarity with and show support for survivors of sexual assault. LaGuardia invites all members of the college community to participate in National Denim Day by wearing jeans on Wednesday, April 24. Denim Day originated in 1999, as a response to a sexual assault conviction that was appealed—and then overturned—by the Italian Supreme Court.
The conviction concerned the sexual assault of an 18-year-old female, by her driving instructor during a routine driving lesson. A statement from the Court, overturning the conviction, argued that because the victim wore very tight jeans, she must have had to help the perpetrator remove them. The justices argued that this demonstrated that the victim had consented—a.k.a. the “jeans alibi.” In protest of this blatant injustice, women in Italy’s Parliament wore jeans on the steps of the Supreme Court. This demonstration of solidarity was picked up by international media and became the catalyst for the international sexual assault prevention education campaign, known as “Denim Day.” For the past 25 years, many institutions including colleges and universities have participated in “Denim Day” and we are excited to continue to show our support by making a fashion statement and wearing jeans to work against the myths and misconceptions held in society. Community members can show their support by posting photos on social media are encouraged to tag LaGuardia (@laguardiacc on Instagram and @LaGuardiaCC on X) and use the hashtag #DenimDay.
Sustainability Council and Art Department Collaborate to Save Birds
Nearly one billion birds are injured or killed by collisions with clear glass windows every year in the United States, according to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. LaGuardia is doing its part to help reduce that number. Bird collisions often occur where vegetation is reflected in windows, where vegetation is behind glass, or at glass walkways and building corners, and where birds can see through glass to habitat on the other side. At the College, there have been many birds colliding into the windows along the E-Building breezeway connecting the outdoor cobblestone corridor and the courtyard.
Through a collaboration between LaGuardia’s Sustainability Council and the Art Department, an effort to protect the birds and highlight the creativity of LaGuardia’s Art students is building awareness about the protection of birds. In late March, the collaborative team invited Art students to design adhesive decals using LaGuardia’s school colors (red, black, white, and grey). The decals which will be placed along the breezeway windows on April 19, will help protect the birds from colliding into the windows and showcase student artwork. There were 30 designs submitted and six designs were selected by a committee of faculty and staff. The winning window art decals (shown here) were designed by Art students: Alexandra Garcia, Amelia Lichon (who had three designs selected), Dulce Amor Gamboa, and Yong Zheng Yuan.

LAGUARDIA AND WAGNER ARCHIVES
The Inner Circle Arrives at The Archives
Processing has begun on our latest acquisition: the Inner Circle Collection! The Inner Circle is a century-old organization of journalists which writes and performs an annual musical lampooning New York politics, followed by a song-and-dance rebuttal from the sitting mayor. This archival collection offers a humorous lens on the city’s current events as well as a glimpse of the mayor’s comedic chops. The Inner Circle will perform their 101st show next weekend, and in celebration we would like to share a clip from the 1986 show, “Triple Clown.” Watch until the end to see Mayor Ed Koch’s dance moves! Reach out to us if you would like to see more of the rich material in this collection.
