Our Spring Plant Sale & EcoMarket is just a week away and we couldn't be more excited! Join us Saturday, May 11, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to shop among thousands of herb, vegetable and native flower seedlings for your garden. Visit our EcoMarket under our all-weather tent for tasty treats from Terroir Bakery and Monigram Coffee Roasters! Shop from a dozen eco-conscious vendors, artists and community groups! There will be music, a raffle and more!
Please note that parking is limited, so carpool if you can.
We look forward to seeing you on this grand day out. All proceeds from the Spring Plant Sale go to support Springbank Farm's Organic Food Bank Garden, ensuring the growth of healthy, fresh, organic produce for those in need in our community.

It's a Mystery! Steve Burrows Talks Birding, Mysteries and Signs Books for May's Conversations for Conservation | |

Space is still available for May's Conversations for Conservation featuring author Steve Burrows talking about his Birder Murder mystery series. Learn how his ecological and birdwatching experience contribute to his mystery series! Steve will have books available for sale and signing at the event.
From Birder to Birder Murder takes place at rare's Slit Barn at 768 Blair Road from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29. This event is FREE, but registration is required.
Also be sure to register for our June Conversations for Conservation, featuring Helmi Hess, Recovery Biologist at Wildlife Preservation Canada speaking on Loggerhead Shrike - On the Brink of Disappearance in Ontario. This event will take place at the Slit Barn at 768 Blair Road from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 26. This event is also FREE, but registration is required.

Where is rare this Weekend?

As well as welcoming the community to rare events, we are going out and bringing rare to you!
Look for the rare table this Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Guelph's River Run Centre as part of the ArtsEverywhere Festival. We'll be in the lobby during the Guelph Lecture On Being featuring Nora Bateson as well as award-winning artists Christine Tootoo, Cris Derksen and Laakkuluk Williamson Bathroy. Tickets are still available at the River Run Centre's website.
Our staff will also be at the Willibald Spring Market, taking place at the Willibald Farm Distillery & Brewery at 1271 Reidsville Road in Ayr, Sunday, May 5 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. There will be fresh blooms, good things to sip, baked goods, fresh brewed coffee and more! We are honoured to be this year's recipient of Willibald's Community Fund, as part of its commitment to support the community and to cultivate change for the better.

| Register Now for Summer ECO Camp Spaces! | |
Give your children an outdoors adventure this summer! Spaces are still available for our week-long Summer ECO Camps. These camps provide children the opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills, values and motivation necessary to become environmentally-responsible citizens, all while having fun!
Camps run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the rare ECO Centre at 768 Blair Road for just $250 per week ($200 for short weeks). Extended care is available an hour before and after each camp for $25 for either the morning or afternoon periods, or $50 for both, for the week.

| Volunteers Needed! Invasive Species Pulls and Greenhouse Care Events Launching this Month | |

The Land Management team at rare has announced its first volunteer dates to fight back against invasive species and to promote the health and propagation of native plants at rare.
This month, the focus will be on removing Garlic Mustard, an aggressive plant introduced from Europe as a potential food source that escaped cultivation and has taken over many forest understories. Fortunately, these plants are easy to pull, and with enough volunteers, we can restore many of our native ecosystems. We will also target invasive Greater Celandine and Dame's Rocket.
Invasive species pulls are happening Thursdays, starting May 9, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. We will meet at Lamb's Inn at 1679 Blair Road and staff will lead volunteers onto the property to pull affected areas. We also need volunteers on Tuesday, May 7, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. for our Native Plant Propagation Program, performing general maintenance of the Land Management greenhouse and preparing plants for the Spring Plant Sale and EcoMarket. This will include a number of different activities, including watering, transplanting to pots, organizing and labeling plants, weeding and so on. Click here for more details and to register.

Ages Foundation Scholarship and Bursaries Deadline Extended to June 30. | |

The deadline to apply for the Ages Foundation Fellowship & Bursaries program has been extended to midnight on Sunday, June 30. Graduate students looking for support for environmentally-related research or arts projects happening at rare now have two more months to finish their applications. The monetary awards will help ensure successful candidates have the necessary resources to conduct and report on their research at rare.

Thank You for a Successful Road Toll! | |

We would like to thank everyone for supporting rare this past Earth Day at the Voluntary Road Toll! Together, we raised just over $1,600 which effectively protects over 800 sq m of environmentally sensitive land now and forever – a record breaking road toll at rare! We at rare are so grateful for each volunteer, donor, neighbour, and staff who made this success possible.

Our Bi-Weekly Poll: Plant Sale Anticipation | |
Last issue, we asked you what you were most excited to see at our coming Spring Plant Sale & EcoMarket. Over 45% of you were excited to see the thousands of herb, vegetable and flower seedlings on sale, while 13% were looking forward to the fresh baked goods and foods from local vendors, and another 13% were interested in the fascinating art designs from local artisans.
Finally, over 27% couldn't pick just one thing to look forward to, and instead are looking forward to everybody having a good time, enjoying the start of spring. I think, in the end, that covers 100% of the people who come out to our Spring Plant Sale & EcoMarket.
For our next question: how many plants will you be buying at the Spring Plant Sale & EcoMarket?
