Upcoming Events

Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale

The Friends of the Dover Public Library are having a book sale on Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4th from 9am to 5pm and Sunday, May 5 from 1-5pm. We will have hundreds of books and DVDs for sale in the Library Lecture Hall. Fiction, non-fiction, biographies, DVDS, kids’ books, cookbooks and more. Items will be priced at $3 or under, and all proceeds go to the Friends of the Dover Public Library to support programs and museum passes. On Monday, May 6th, all leftovers will be free! Don’t miss it!

Intro to Antique Hand Fans

On Monday, May 6 at 6:30pm in the Library's Lecture Hall, come learn about the history of antique fans! See 100 antique hand fans from the 18th & 19th century, up close and personal. Have an antique hand fan at home? Bring it for identification!

Real Life Solutions for Organized Spaces

Join us on Tuesday, May 7 at 6:30pm in the Library's Lecture Hall as Jill Buchan and Tanner Clark, professional organizers and owners of Real Organized, will give some tips about the basics of decluttering and organizing your space. They will also discuss how clutter affects our mental health and some common challenges to getting and staying organized.

Festival de Cannes: Movie Showing and Canned Food Drive

The Festival de Cannes or Cannes Film Festival runs this year from May 14 - May 25. Get a jump on it by joining us at the library on Wednesday, May 8 at 6pm to watch Best Picture Oscar nominee "The Holdovers" starring Paul Giamatti, and Best Supporting Actress winner Da'Vine Joy Randolph. And bring a donation of canned food for local food pantries! 

Volunteer Fair

On Saturday, May 11 from 2-4pm, local organizations will have representatives available in the lecture hall to discuss volunteer opportunities. Find your place to help out, have your questions answered, and make contacts!

Book Bracelets

Make a wooden book bracelet in this beginner friendly creative program! All supplies will be provided. This program is open to all ages, but is best suited to ages 10 and up.

Blues Concert ft. Poor Howard Stith & Mike Rogers

Join us on Monday, May 13 at 6:30pm in the Lecture Hall for a blues performance by Poor Howard Stith and Mike Rogers! Poor Howard performs primarily on 12-string guitar and some 6-string guitar played “bottleneck” style. In addition to explaining the songs, he also incorporate folk humor and short shaggy dog stories to introduce some of the songs. Mike Roger is a virtuoso harmonica player, and accompanies Howard in the styles of the masters from Sonny Terry to Little Walter.

Evening of Poetry

All poets who participated in the library’s 22nd Annual Poetry Contest are invited to read their poetry at this event on Monday, May 20 at 6:30pm. The general public is encouraged to come and enjoy the readings. This event will take place on the library lawn (rain location is the library's Lecture Hall). 

Advance Care Directives with Wentworth-Douglass Hospital

On Tuesday, May 21 from 1-3pm in the Library's Lecture Hall, join representatives from Wentworth-Douglass Hospital to assist those interested in drafting an advanced directive. Spaces are limited, and registration is required. To schedule your appointment or inquire further, please call the hospital’s social work office at 603-740-2826.

Spring Paint-Along

Come paint a river scene on Wednesday, May 22 at 6:30pm! All materials will be provided, just come paint and relax! This is not a class, but we will follow a video demonstrating the requisite technique, and all skill levels are welcome. This program is for adults only, and registration is required.

Teen Programs

On Wednesday, May 8 at 5:30pm in the Activity Room, teens in grades 6-12 are are welcome to make a luminary jar using pressed flowers! All supplies will be provided (while supplies last), and no registration is required.

Book Groups

New members to one or all groups are always welcome!

Cover 2 Cover will be meeting on Thursday, May 2 at 10am to discuss The Book of Aron by Jim Shepard.

The Afternoon/Evening Book Group will be meeting on Monday, May 20 at 3pm and 6:30pm to discuss The Boston Girl by Anita Diamant.

Get Lit will be meeting on Wednesday, May 29 at 6:30pm at Roost to discuss The Swallows by Lisa Lutz.

Two-Eyed Cyclops will be taking May off. See you in June!

Matter of Fact will meet on Wednesday, May 8 at 2pm to discuss Forty Autumns by Nina Willner.

Reading Rainbow will hold its meeting on Thursday, May 9 at 6:30pm to discuss The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin.

Silent Reading Group

Come relax and read with others at the Dover Public Library on Sunday, May 12 at 2pm! It's a book club with no assigned reading, no expectations, and no rules. Share light discussion on the book you brought and enjoy the quiet, productive space of the library.

Knitting Group

The Knitting Group is meeting Wednesday, May 1 & 15 from 9:30-11:30am in the library’s Makerspace. All levels and fiber artists are welcome!

Chess Group

Chess Group is meeting Wednesday, May 1, 8, 15, 22, & 29 from 6:30-8pm in the library’s Maker Space.

Meaningful Conversations

Join us on Saturday, May 4, 11, & 18 at 10am in the Library's Trustees Room for this conversation group. The idea of Meaningful Conversations is to expand the number of people engaging in nonjudgmental, meaningful conversations on deep topics.

Genealogy Group

Join us on Tuesday, May 7 at 6:30pm in the Library's Lecture Hall for Genealogy Group! Whether you’re new to genealogical research or a seasoned pro, this group is a great way to meet others who share the same passion, can give you advice in your research, and listen to your newly-discovered family histories.

Quiet Time: A Group for Parents and Caregivers of Young Children

Parents and caregivers of young children are invited to join us on Thursday, May 9 & 23 at 6pm in the Library's Trustees Room for this relaxed, open forum community group. We’ll discuss a variety of topics, from navigating childcare to going back to work.

Friends of the Library Meeting

On Tuesday, May 14 at 6:30pm, join us for our monthly Friends of the Dover Public Library meeting. Learn how you can make the Dover Public Library an even better place!

Caregiver Cafe

On Wednesday, May 15 at 10:30am, join Cornerstone VNA as we host our monthly Caregiver Café to support Dover area family caregivers. Come for a morning of support, education and conversation.

Family Game Night

On Wednesday, May 15 from 6-8pm, join us to play a fun selection of card & board games, and meet other board game enthusiasts in the community! You’re also welcome to bring your own games. All ages welcome!

Cocheco River Writers

On Thursday, May 23 at from 6:30-8:30pm, join a community of local writers with Cocheco River Writers! Discuss ideas, get tips, and share your work with others in a low-key, inviting atmosphere.

Dungeon World: 18 and Older Group

Drop in and play Dungeon World with Game Master Dave! This group is for new and veteran role-playing gamers to join us in the library for adventure, strategy, and imagination. You do not need to have attended previous sessions to enjoy your first game. No experience or materials are required and all skill levels are welcome to play.


This month's sessions will be indoors in the Lecture Hall from 6 - 8 PM on May 14 & 28.

All Abilities Club Programs

Adult Chapter Book Club

On Wednesday, May 1 at 11am, adults with all abilities are invited to join the Chapter Book Club. We will be reading The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum.

Art For All

On Wednesday, May 8 at 11am, this inclusive program for adults welcomes those with special needs as we create art and craft projects.

Legos

On Wednesday, May 15 at 11am, adults with disabilities are invited for an hour of in building with Legos. Use your imagination to make your own creation or try one of the challenges provided.

Music

On Wednesday, May 22 at 11am, adults with disabilities are invited for a lively sing-along to your favorite tunes.
