This Week's Devotional - Listening for the Promise
| |
“And while they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling, he said to them, ‘Have you anything here to eat?’”
- Luke 24:41a
This is such an odd statement. How can they be happy about something they can’t believe is happening? Yet, haven’t we all experienced that at some point in our lives? Have you ever been so joyously happy and yet at the same time questioned how you could be so lucky? Have you ever received an award you didn’t think you deserved and yet accepted it with joy that you were the recipient? Have you ever seen a test result thinking that you surely failed only to discover that you did very well?
Everyone can remember a time they have received something with joy but also disbelief. That’s what happened to the disciples after the resurrection. They were so grief-stricken over the death of Jesus that his appearances probably did not make a difference at first. Imagine the conversation that was going on at the beginning of today’s Gospel lesson: “You saw Jesus? But He’s dead!” “Was it a ghost?” They were probably arguing about what was seen and experienced.
Perhaps the witnesses saw someone that looked like Jesus. The witnesses’ testimony was rejected because it was ridiculous and downright impossible. One by one they began to see the truth when they witnessed Jesus with their own eyes. One by one they realized that they could no longer ignore the reality: Jesus was alive.
It is no surprise, then, that Jesus’ followers were both joyous and disbelieving. After all, this was beyond their understanding. The disciples who had seen Him probably said “See! We told you so!” Yet, even those disciples were probably scared and confused. How do you respond to a physical being that is a man and yet not a man?
Even though Jesus had promised that He would be raised from the dead, the disciples never expected this turn of events. They were worried about the future; they were worried about their lives. Jesus was back among them, but how? The disciples’ questions were answered with a simple request from Jesus, “Have you anything here to eat?” He wanted them to know that it was all true. He was alive again. He was different, yet He was the same. In joy as well as in happy disbelief, the disciples shared another meal with their Master.

Women's Bible Study
Janet Zastrow and Nancy Wittmus are co-facilitating a Women's Bible Study, on the first and third Tuesday of the month at 10:00 a.m. The Study is based on the book Jesus Followers written by the daughter and granddaughter of Billy Graham. They share inspiring stories from their family life that offer compelling insights for leaving a legacy of faith.
Passing on our faith does not happen passively—it’s something we intentionally pursue with prayer and joy. Yet many of us struggle to know what it looks like to live out a contagious faith in today’s world. We long for spiritual wisdom on how to ignite faith in our children, grandchildren, and others we encounter.
Jesus Followers offers practical ideas, biblical teaching, and inspiring true stories from Anne Graham Lotz and her daughter Rachel-Ruth Lotz Wright for effectively running the race of faith and passing the Baton of Truth to the next generation.
Jesus Followers not only offers a glimpse into the living rooms and prayer closets of a faith-filled family, but it also equips you with the wisdom, motivation, and practical ideas for consistently and joyfully sharing your faith.
All women are invited to attend. Bring a friend. There is no cost for the study materials. Please send any questions to Janet at janetzastrow@att.net.

APRIL MISSION OF THE MONTH
Our mission is to empower men struggling with substance use disorder by offering a holistic treatment program focused on compassion, healing, and personal growth while fostering a compassionate community of accountability, guiding them on their journey to recovery.
Our residential program is a holistic experience that addresses men’s physical, emotional, and spiritual health needs by providing an atmosphere of strength and support. We offer dignity, accountability, and an opportunity to rebuild your life free from addiction.
You'll be able to meet Trenton, a Serenity counselor, this weekend at both services.
To support this important Mission of the Month, you may include it in your weekly offering envelope or designate the donation as "Mission of the Month" in your online giving.
| |
Serenity's three stages of support help clients live the life they deserve:
Recovery
We're more than just a residential treatment facility. We offer a supportive, peaceful environment where you can live your life on your terms. Here, clients will have access to supportive living and group recovery sessions and therapy, including individualized recovery plans just for them.
Stability
A part of supporting their success in recovery is helping them find stability through employment, which in turn helps build their self-sustainability. We support our program participants with career and skill building opportunities after successful clean time.
Spirit
Serenity Inns focuses on the mind, body and spirit. Our program was developed as a faith-based recovery support community with a focus on facilitating spiritual practices that include spirituality and giving back to our community.

Women's Book Group
Monday, May 13, 2024
12:30 - 2:00 p.m.
Media Room
"The Woman in the Library" by Sulari Gentill
In every person's story, there is something to hide...
The ornate reading room at the Boston Public Library is quiet, until the tranquility is shattered by a woman's terrified scream. Security guards take charge immediately, instructing everyone inside to stay put until the threat is identified and contained. While they wait for the all-clear, four strangers, who'd happened to sit at the same table, pass the time in conversation and friendships are struck. Each has his or her own reasons for being in the reading room that morning—it just happens that one is a murderer.
Award-winning author Sulari Gentill delivers a sharply thrilling read with The Woman in the Library, an unexpectedly twisty literary adventure that examines the complicated nature of friendship and shows us that words can be the most treacherous weapons of all.

Worship Attendance and Giving | |
Online giving provides options!
While cash and checks are always welcome, the “Give Online” button on the Calvary Lutheran Church website provides another option. And, with the expansion of our vendor’s software, the options are now expanded and customized. In addition to giving to the General Operating Fund, Building Fund and Mission of the Month, you can now specify contributions for Altar Flowers, Sunday Morning Fellowship Treats, NALC, etc.
| | |
Please note that contributions to the Mission of the Month are allocated to the organization for the month in which the donation is made
If you have any questions or would like to make a pledge, please contact Cindy Rooks, Finance Secretary, via email at finance@calvarylc.com or (262) 786-4010.
| |
Giving to the NALC Campaign |
Just a reminder that contributions to the NALC's 20/20 Vision Campaign need to be designated as "NALC" either on your giving envelope or on your check. If you have any questions, please contact Cindy Rooks at finance@calvarylc.com.
For an update on the NALC's 20/20 Vision campaign, click on the link below to watch an update from Bishop Selbo. This video highlights the work we are doing, the ways in which gifts to the initiative are already being used, and the impact future gifts will have in our shared witness and mission.

Do you need a new Church Directory? |

Sanctuary Flowers
A wonderful way to celebrate a special occasion or remember a loved one is by sponsoring flowers at our altar. The cost is $35 and you may take them home following the Sunday morning worship. (If you'd prefer, you can leave the flowers at church to be enjoyed in the church office.)
The 2024 sign-up sheet is posted on the bulletin board in the Narthex, near the door to Fellowship Hall.

We invite you to provide
Hospitality Treats on Sunday
We invite you to stay after worship on Sunday mornings and enjoy fellowship time and a treat/cup of coffee in Fellowship Hall.
If you'd like to provide treats (donuts, bagels, etc.) for Sunday hospitality time, there is a sheet on the bulletin board in Fellowship Hall. You may bring the treats (six dozen) and drop them off in the kitchen, or simply add a “P” behind your name, pay $30 to the church office and the treats will be purchased for you.
The sign up sheet is posted on the bulletin board. Thank you for your support!

Live Stream Attendance Link |
If you watch our services via the Live Stream, please take a minute to let us know. There is now a link called "Online Worship Attendance" on the page where you access each week's service.
We appreciate you taking the time to complete this each week. It helps us know that our Live Stream is being viewed and by whom.
Thank you!

The right side of the Sanctuary (as you face the altar) is equipped with a hearing loop system which transmits an audio signal directly into a hearing aid via a magnetic field. This greatly reduces background noise, competing sounds, reverberation and other acoustic distortions that reduce clarity of sound.
Most hearing aids are equipped with a t-coil and connecting to this system is an easy switch on the hearing aid. If you need assistance during worship with this system, please reach out to an usher or any staff member.
| | |
The church office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until noon. The door that is closest to the office (NW corner) will be open during those hours.
Please check in with the office staff so we know you are in the building.
The office phone number is (262) 786-4010. Feel free to leave a message if you call after hours and we will contact you the next day.
