Cornwall Public Library Newsletter - April 2024 | |
From the
Director's Desk...
| |
I'm handing my little column over to a guest writer for this month. He has written a beautiful letter. He is a patron of the CPL and is often here. Charles, thank you for your heartfelt words. As Brenda said, " Your expression of grief and the need to connect to others certainly hits home for all of us at some point in our world. Hopefully, for now, coming to the Cornwall Public Library and actively helping at the Friendly Visitor Program brings you comfort.
Thanks for expressing your experience at our library in such a thoughtful and sincere way."
Charlotte A. Dunaief
Library Director

MORE THAN BOOKS
While grieving the loss of my wife, I felt a magnetic pull of isolation, which is not unusual. Paradoxically, I felt so much better when friends or family visited. I realized I needed to get out and be with other people. But how? Where? I asked Brenda Goldfarb, our Library’s Adult Programs Coordinator, if she had any ideas. She had several for me.
One of them was a volunteer program run by Jewish Family Services called the Friendly Visitor Program. There are several ways to participate. The one I chose entails visiting with a homebound, lonely, elderly woman for an hour or two. I can see how this visit brightens her day. It brightens mine as well. Now, in the visiting equation, I’m on both sides.
So thank you, Brenda. I never would have known about this program if I hadn’t reached out to you. And my thanks to the Library as well. As a group, librarians are my favorite people.

Everyone needs friends, and the Cornwall Public Library has the best! The Friends of the Cornwall Library is a non-profit group that exists to promote public awareness of the Cornwall Public Library and its services, raise funds for library initiatives, and contribute to the cultural enrichment of the local community.
Our Friends group not only does each of these things beautifully, but it has a fun time in the process. You would be hard-pressed to find someone in our community who hasn’t stopped by their used bookstore or attended one of their fabulous Saturday book sales.
There are currently openings on the Friends of the Library Board of Directors. If you want to join this group that plans and coordinates the Friends' activities, contact Martha LaVallee at 845 401-4943 or marthalavallee6@gmail.com.
