Banshri Patel, master’s candidate in Health Services Administration and Public Health, is a natural leader — but she didn’t always know it.

Stepping into a Dual Master's Program

In 2021, Banshri Patel stepped out of her comfort zone and into her purpose. The recent college graduate was seeking hands-on experience in the business side of healthcare, so she decided to enroll in Barry University’s dual master’s program in Health Services Administration and Public Health.

Growth and Mentorship at Barry University

Though she began her Barry journey as a quieter student, Banshri quickly gained confidence under the mentorship of her professor Dr. Jeffrey Ritter. “He pushed me to expand my horizons both professionally and personally,” she says. “One of the first things that he told us in class was, ‘If you don’t know something all you have to do is ask.’”

Active Participation and Leadership Emergence

So, she began speaking up. She vocalized her questions in class and  challenged herself not to shy away from group discussions and collaborations. By her second year in the program, Banshri had emerged as a leader among her peers, taking the helm of major projects in several of her courses and earning a position as an administrative assistant at Miami’s Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.

Reflecting on Personal and Professional Growth

Now, as she prepares to graduate with her dual master’s degree, Banshri looks back on her breakthrough Barry experience. She has not only developed her professional skills but also realized her love of leadership and desire to take her career to new heights. “I have been able to become an initiator rather than a follower,” she says.
