Last year saw WSD re-emerging from the Pandemic. As the WSD Vice-Chair Dorothy has often said, “We’re Back!” Here are some of our accomplishments:
- Membership grew from 49 members to 132.
- We introduced a QR Code that is on our banner, business cards, banners and buttons. Using the QR Code allows anyone to go directly to the WSD website.
- Picnic in August.
- Collaborating with Albuquerque Teachers Federation to elect Ronalda Tome to the APS School Board.
- Purchased a new camera to enhance our zoom capability for live participation and uploading on You Tube.
- Purchased a new speaker system with corded and wireless microphones for our WSD meetings.
- Engaging participants at our WSD meeting with trivia games.
- Getting our message out in the DPBC’s weekly Blue Review.
- Year-end holiday potluck, celebrating our members.
- We expanded already in-place social media.
- On average we reach 2,851 on Facebook with 61% female and 39% male.
- X/Twitter has 198 followers, but no information on how many we actually reach. Recently, a KOB reporter has started following us.
- Instagram has 255 followers, but no information on how many we actually reach.
- You Tube broadcasts of our WSD meetings and forums.
While we have much to celebrate, we also are reviewing some things that require improvement, such as securing a set day for our meetings, continuing our coalition building, further outreach to Democrats residing on the West Side, listening to our youth and discovering talents they may bring to the WSD, and continue our collaboration with the DPBC in electing qualified Democratic Candidates.
Thank You for your participation in helping us reach our West Side residents! Working together, we will keep the West Side Blue!

On Your Mark
2024 will be an important election year for the Nation, and the State of New Mexico. During the year, you will have opportunities to learn about Democratic Candidates running to serve us, their constituents. WSD will be happy to promote Candidates in our monthly programming, newsletter, website, and our social media platforms [Facebook, Instagram, X/Twitter]. You, as an individual voter will have many opportunities to be involved, so please keep track of WSD in the coming months.
While we took a break for the holidays, the Executive Committee met and discussed the upcoming 2024 election cycle. We realize there are many running for elected positions locally and nationally. As a result, we unanimously approved a policy for Candidates in their efforts in reaching our WSD membership, while allowing our individual members to be active in supporting a Candidate of their choice.
How WSD Will Communicate Regarding Candidates
The following policy was approved by the WSD Executive Committee. “WSD does not endorse or contribute financially to any candidate before the primary.” This disclaimer will be published with each candidate’s announcement.
-
WSD policy is to announce candidate events in our newsletter. All Democratic Candidates will be treated equally. The goal is to schedule the newsletter to be published the third week of each month.
-
Candidates are encouraged to submit any pertinent information regarding their campaigns by the Second Monday of the month.
-
Members of the WSD are free to endorse and/or contribute to any candidate, but they must make clear that they are doing so as an individual and not on behalf of WSD.
-
WSD does not share its membership list with anyone, including candidates or their campaign staff. WSD uses its membership list solely for official WSD business.

WSD Bylaws Proposed Revision
At the direction of the Executive Committee, a Bylaws Committee was established earlier this year to update our governing documents, while keeping with the spirit of the original bylaws and allowing for more flexibility within the WSD. The Bylaws Committee — made up of Maureen Skowran as Chair, Ivan Pfeifer, Cynthia Borrego, and ex officio member Joe Sinico — met several times over the last few months. During the time the Committee met, they shared progress with the Executive Committee which offered comments. Those comments were taken into consideration in finalizing the proposal that we are happy to present to you, the full membership.
The following documents are now available to you here:

Annual Dues
The West Side Democrats of Bernalillo County is a membership organization that helps to educate, mobilize, and educate voters about campaigns and issues pertinent to Albuquerque’s west side. Anyone can join for $10 per year. Your membership fee helps to pay for costs of organizing events that bring West Side voters together.
We are so grateful for everyone who is currently a member. As our mission continues, it is time to begin collecting dues for 2024. Those who paid dues in October through December have been credited for 2024.
