Call to Action WHAT  We ask YOU to provide Public Comment on important proposed amendments to the City Charter -- which, if passed, would place the issue on the ballot in November; and one resolution about the city’s immigrant-friendly policy. WHY IMPORTANT? “Proposed changes to the city’s charter have stirred up an old-time controversy. Several Albuquerque city councilors are asking for a slew of changes to the city’s charter that would go to the voters,” according to an article in City Desk ABQ, City charter changes could create chaos - City Desk ABQ.  CITY CHARTER AMENDMENTS: Each amendment the council passes will automatically appear on the November ballot for voter consideration. These proposed amendments have been described as “sweeping changes” to the city charter in the ongoing discord between city council and the mayor’s office. P-24-1:  Adopting A Proposition To Be Sent To The Voters At The 2024 General Election, Proposing To Amend Article II Of The Charter Of The City Of Albuquerque Regarding Minimum Votes For Elected Offices And Runoff Elections (Lewis, Grout and Peña): Reduce the minimum percentage of votes needed to elect a future mayor -- from 50% back down to 40%. If no candidate gets 40%, then there would be a runoff.  P-24-2: Adopting A Proposition To Be Sent To The Voters At The 2024 General Election, Proposing To Amend Article V The Charter Regarding The Procedures For Appointment And Removal Of The City Attorney And City Clerk (Lewis and Grout): Create a committee to recommend candidates for city attorney and city clerk, with the city council retaining responsibility for the final decision. P-24-3: Adopting A Proposition To Be Sent To The Voters At The 2024 General Election, Proposing To Amend Article V Of The Charter Of The City Of Albuquerque) Regarding Procedures For Appointment Of Administrative Officers And Appointment And Removal Of The Chief Of Police And Fire Chief (Lewis and Peña): Change how Albuquerque Police and Fire Rescue chiefs are named. The proposal would allow the city to assist or enforce federal immigration laws should someone who is an immigrant commits a violent crime. Immigrant community groups and immigration law officials have opposed the bill.
