June is LGBTQ Pride Month

On June 28, 1969, the New York City Police Department raided a bar frequented by people who were gay, lesbian, and transgender. The raid was not unusual. Homosexual conduct was illegal in every state (but Illinois) and police would often raid places known to serve people in the LGBTQ community. What was unusual was that the people fought back, resisting unjust oppression and abuse from authorities. A riot broke out that lasted several days.

The following year and every year since a parade has been held in June to commemorate the LGBTQ+ community standing up for themselves.

FAQs About Jesus, the Bible, and the LGBTQ+ Community is a document authored by the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles designed to answer some of the more frequently asked questions you may have about The Episcopal Church's position. It certainly won't answer all of them, but it is meant as a conversation starter, not a mandate.

I hope you will take a few minutes to download and read the FAQ. And please let me know if you have any further questions.

Letter from Dawn Denyer, former parishioner

My husband, (Anthony Denyer) and I were members of St. Francis from around 1973 to 2001, when we retired to Corvallis, Oregon to be closer to our boys, Mark & Stuart.  We treasure the friends we made at St. Francis, and I - as Junior Choir mother at the time - still follow on Facebook some of "my" young members who have since reached dizzying heights and now have children of their own. Tony was active in the Antiques Show among other things.

A couple of weeks ago, after tractor-mowing our back lawn, Tony looked so tired that I took him to Emergency. They admitted him immediately, and he passed away a week later from a brain infection.

As Mark, our elder son, (majority owner of an HVAC company in Portland) was in Italy on a work/mountain climbing expedition and unable to get home, our younger son, Stuart (now assistant to the Ambassador in New Delhi, India), flew back to help me with the many tasks associated with a death. It is all rather overwhelming, and I haven't been able to write to individual friends. [Please] let our friends know how much we value their thoughts and prayers and notes.

With all good wishes,

Dawn Denyer
