Keeping in Touch - April

Greetings Tutors!

Volunteer Appreciation Week (April 17-27) gives us a focused opportunity to salute our volunteers’ commitment to Literacy DuPage. We spotlight you, the fantastic people whose kind and consistent service transforms our communities. We are struck by the humility, compassion, and passion you, our treasured volunteers, bring to our students and our organization.

Whether tutoring or talking with staff, your love of our mission and your student is always apparent. Saying “thank you” just does not seem to capture the depth of our appreciation for the way you share your time, talents and treasure with us. Your commitment and sacrifice to work weekly with your student creates a ripple effect across your student’s life, your life, and our community.

We proudly support more than 201 tutors and 239 students this year. Collectively, as tutoring pairs, you have generated more than 6,283 hours of tutoring time to date. We are deeply grateful for your unwavering service to both your learner and to Literacy DuPage. Your commitment and dedication are truly commendable. Thank you!

As always, please do not hesitate to reach out if you have questions or need help with tutoring strategies. Be well and take care.

With gratitude and hope,

Carol Garcia

While-Reading Strategies

Last month, KIT focused on pre-reading activities to promote student engagement with reading material content. This month’s focus is on While-Reading Strategies.

Pre-reading and post-reading strategies are worthless if students do not retain valuable information while reading. However, students may not be successful in comprehending their reading if they are reading words on the page without taking steps to gather an understanding of the reading content consciously. While-Reading Strategies are used during reading to assist students in understanding what they are reading.

While-Reading Strategies need to be modeled, modeled, and modeled to students before they become automatic. Posing questions before and during reading can be effective because they:

  • Give students a purpose for reading.
  • Focus the student’s attention on what they are to learn.
  • Help students actively think as they read, encourage students to monitor their comprehension, allow students to review content, and relate what they have learned to what they already know.

Click here to see 9 activities that will get your student to actively engage with a text and increase their understanding while reading.
