April is Stress Awareness Month

Stress and aging go hand-in-hand over the whole course of our lives.

More than just a mental-emotional experience, stressful situations trigger biochemical responses that kick our bodies into high gear so we can better handle that situation. However, we aren’t meant to be in this high-alert mode for long periods of time, let alone long periods of our life.

Identifying symptoms is an important first step in beginning to manage stress.

Here are a few signs you could be stressed out.

  1. Difficulties sleeping
  2. Change in eating habits
  3. Difficulties with concentration
  4. Withdrawal or isolation
  5. Tension headaches
  6. More aches and pains in general
  7. Weight loss or gain
  8. Low energy and fatigue

MANAGE YOUR STRESS

Stress can show up in many different ways for each of us. Paying attention to your moods and patterns can give you clues that something isn’t right.

Stress Management: How to Reduce and Relieve Stress

Managing stress isn’t always easy, it takes a lot of insight and thoughtful review of your day to day activities and emotions to identify ways to cope. Some stressors, the things that can cause stress, can be changed, others cannot. To help lessen the effects of stress, you can practice these lifestyle changes.

  1. Get moving – physical activity is a great stress reducer. A brisk walk outdoors can do wonders for your mood.
  2. Connect to others – talk to family and friends, spending quality time with others can make you feel safe and understood.
  3. Make time for fun and relaxation - Beyond a take-charge approach and a positive attitude, you can reduce stress in your life by carving out “me” time. Don't get so caught up in the hustle and bustle of life that you forget to take care of your own needs.
  4. Maintain a balance with a healthy lifestyle – In addition to regular exercise, there are other healthy lifestyle choices that can increase your resistance to stress, such as eating healthy and getting enough sleep.

Stress Management: Are you resilient?

Resilience means being able to adapt to life's misfortunes and setbacks. Being resilient also helps you manage unexpected stressful events.

Consider these tips to become more resilient:

  • Get connected. Building strong, positive relationships with loved ones and friends can provide you with needed support, guidance, and acceptance in good and bad times. Establish other important connections by volunteering or joining a faith or spiritual community.
  • Make every day meaningful. Do something that gives you a sense of accomplishment and purpose every day. Set clear, achievable goals to help you look toward the future with meaning.
  • Learn from experience. Think of how you've coped with hardships in the past. Consider the skills and strategies that helped you through difficult times. You might even write about past experiences in a journal to help you identify positive and negative behavior patterns — and guide your future behavior.
  • Remain hopeful. You can't change the past, but you can always look toward the future. Accepting and even anticipating change makes it easier to adapt and view new challenges with less anxiety.
  • Take care of yourself. Tend to your own needs and feelings. Participate in activities and hobbies you enjoy. Include physical activity in your daily routine. Get plenty of sleep and create consistent bedtime rituals. Eat a healthy diet. Practice stress management and relaxation techniques, such as yoga, meditation, guided imagery, deep breathing or prayer.
  • Be proactive. Don't ignore your problems. Instead, figure out what needs to be done, make a plan and take action. Although it can take time to recover from a major setback, traumatic event or loss, know that your situation can improve if you work at it.

Depression: More than 'the blues'

Depression is not a normal part of growing older. Depression is not just having “the blues” or the emotions we feel when grieving the loss of a loved one. It is a true medical condition that is treatable, like diabetes or hypertension.

SIGNS OF DEPRESSION

The Program to Encourage Active, Rewarding Lives (PEARLS) is an evidence-based program designed to reduce depressive symptoms and improve quality of life in older adults.

Our PEARLS coaches will provide six to eight in-home sessions to help you:

  • Recognize the symptoms of depression.
  • Use a seven-step approach to identify and solve problems.
  • Plan social and physical activities, which often improve the mood of people with depression.

What is Aging & Disability Resource Connection (ADRC)?

An ADRC is a network of organizations that work together to make access to services easier for older adults, people with disabilities, and family care providers. We are here to support you in finding resources and exploring your community options for living independently.

We can help you stay in your home, remain connected to your community, make a smooth transition from hospital to home, and access caregiver resources or respite care.

How can an ADRC help you?

  • By providing in-person, phone, or online information about a wide range of services and resources.
  • By presenting options for long-term services and support so that informed choices can be made about care planning.
  • By offering short-term services to address urgent needs and prevent unnecessary admission to a nursing facility or hospital.
  • By coordinating relocation from hospitals or nursing facilities back to a home or the community and arranging for needed support.

ADRCs are transforming the way people access community resources.
