TTA Live Virtual Training: Housing & Recovery Focused Framework
Are you concerned about the mindset of service providers toward people experiencing homelessness? Maybe your organization has had significant staff turnover and new staff are possibly bringing uninformed beliefs with them? Or maybe there are limited success stories despite the community's efforts to reduce homelessness?
If any of these are true, you may be witnessing a phenomenon driven by a lack of housing and recovery focused thinking. Often, support workers in this sector are comfortable with “managing” homelessness but struggle with how to work in a way which encourages participants to leave their homeless state. Join us for a thought-provoking training to discuss for shifting from “managing” to “ending” homelessness.
WHEN: December 6th and 7th from 11:30am to 4:00pm EST

In March 2023, there were almost 2 million visits to food banks across Canada, representing a 32 per cent increase compared to March 2022, and a 78.5 per cent increase compared to March 2019, which is the highest year-over-year increase in usage ever reported. In its 2023 HungerCount report, Food Banks Canada documents food bank use in Canada. It is a cross-sectional census survey of most food bank agencies, organizations, and programs, within and outside of the Food Banks Canada network. The HungerCount provides a point in time snapshot of food bank use in Canada. Read the report.

The best way to win grants is to clearly illustrate the importance of your program or project to the people who will directly benefit from it – in plain language. You can only do this after you have done extensive research. To help, we’ve put together an action list to make sure your next grant is more than just "dazzle":
- Read through the grant guidelines and identify SPECIFICALLY why this grant is a good match for your program. If it isn't a good match, you should save your time and your money for the grants that are a good fit.
- Read through the grant questions carefully and find them in the guidelines for additional clarity. Grant applications are often worded in vague language, but the examples provide more definition.
- Answer the questions in point-form first, so you know that you are hitting the target. To answer the questions clearly you will need to refer to your case for support, and/or talk to the program managers. (Don't have a case for support? See below!)
- Align, Align, Align. Make sure every aspect of your application is playing on the same team (no own goals here!). The budget should tell the same story as the description and the activities you are outlining. It is one finely tuned machine built for one purpose - to win the gold.
- Check all the boxes - don't be disqualified by not submitting accurate support documents.
A Case Statement, or Case for Support, provides a competitive edge when it comes to grant and proposal writing because it can supply the narrative, logic, and data for the program or project. The Fundraising Lab has extensive experience helping non-profits craft strong and cohesive Case Statements. Check out our How To Write a Case Statement course to learn how to build an effective and engaging Case Statement, while developing your storytelling skills to create a fundraising masterpiece that will connect donors to your good cause. Think you could use a bit more help? Reach out to us at hello@fundraisinglab.ca to discuss how we can support you best!

SUAP provides time-limited funding for a wide range of innovative and evidence-informed projects including substance use prevention, harm reduction and treatment initiatives across the country. Projects target a range of substances, including opioids, stimulants, cannabis, alcohol, nicotine and tobacco, at the community, regional and national levels.
Budget 2023 committed $359.2M over five years, starting in 2023-24, to support a renewed Canadian Drugs and Substances Strategy (CDSS). The CDSS guides the federal government's work in an effort to save lives and minimize substance-related harms for people who use drugs and alcohol, their families, and communities.
Building on previous efforts to develop innovative, community-led approaches, Budget 2023 includes $144M for SUAP to fund community-based supports, and evidence-based health interventions.
Through this 2023 national call for proposals (CFP), SUAP will fund projects that address substance use issues across the continuum of care.
Projects are anticipated to begin as early as June 1, 2024 and must be completed no later than March 31, 2028.

This page provides an organized way to see what kinds of funding there are, how to apply for that funding, and also to see what letters PPF has written to the Ontario Ministry, and what replies have been provided. Some of these newer letters include communication in September and October 2023. It also provides useful links for advocacy and further support.
