Dear Friend,

This past Saturday was the first community conversation regarding the future of the Franconia Governmental Center site. I was excited to see over 150 people in attendance. An online opportunity to provide input has been created and can be found here. FAQs regarding health and safety, infrastructure, the redevelopment process, and more have been uploaded to the community conversation webpage, which can be found here. The next community conversation is on April 22nd at John Lewis High School (6540 Franconia Road) from 6pm-8pm.

On Sunday, I was honored to attend a special event celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Woman’s Club of Springfield (pictured). For 70 years, the Club has been donating time and money to great causes in central Springfield. The Woman's Club of Springfield holds three objectives: to study topics of general interest to the members, to carry out charitable projects of civic-social improvement, and to promote good fellowship amongst its members.

The Woman’s Club of Springfield was an early supporter, promoter, and founding partner of the Richard Byrd Library in 1955, and has provided continuous financial and volunteer support to the library since then. An important initiative that the Club is known for is the Pink Elephant Thrift Shop. The Shop was created in 1964 and is run by an all-volunteer staff, with net proceeds benefitting community programs. Additionally, the Woman's Club of Springfield holds an annual Spring Faire to raise funds in support of Bethany House of Northern Virginia. Thank you for including me in your celebration. I appreciate every opportunity to celebrate an organization driving positive change in the community.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve.

In the District

Visit to Hybla Valley Elementary School

Last Tuesday, I visited Hybla Valley Elementary School. I began in a STEAM classroom, where students were assembling housing kits fitted with green infrastructure. This sparked a great conversation about how the county government can promote climate-friendly behaviors, for example, making bus rapid transit and walking paths more available and accessible. Thank you, Assistant Principal Karlie Hale and the Hybla Valley Huskies, for having me!

Lewis Leadership Program Community Exhibition of Learning

This past Monday, I attended the Lewis Leadership Program Community Exhibition of Learning at John Lewis High School. The exhibition featured student and teacher presentations on action projects they designed and led this year, based on the themes of leadership, justice, service, and advocacy.

The Lewis Leadership Program adopts the principles of Congressman John Lewis’ life through a curriculum that focuses on government, public policy, leadership, and human rights. Thank you, director Deborah Marsh (pictured), for having me.
