Innovation summit

"Very good choice of speakers, valuable content, interactive elements, opportunity to network - it was outstanding."Innovation Summit Attendee

To the more than 130 people who participated in this year's Innovation Summit - thank you for making it a success! Our enthusiastic presenters provided us with a wealth of information on innovation and how to use it to add value to our organizations. And then there were the opportunities to network and share information with our peers - this is what really makes the event the draw that it is! In the end, we all walked away with ideas to take back to our organizations and colleagues - ideas that will help us serve our members and customers better.

Next up: the 2013 Holiday Event . . .
Member Engagement: Walking the Walk
Discussion focused on aligning association strategies with goals and desires of members

Increasingly, associations are seeing members who want to get involved, but who prefer to direct their own volunteer efforts. How do we deepen engagement pathways for these members and what is WSAE's role as a means to that engagement?

These were some of the questions posed during a WSAE Peer-to-Peer conference call on Sept. 4, facilitated by Ross Ament, MA, CAE, president of Ament Associates, with presenter Eric Lanke, CEO of the National Fluid Power Association.

Lanke, who had led a similar discussion during ASAE's Membership and Marketing Conference, told the nearly 40 participants on the call his own engagement story: how his suggestion to WSAE to develop an innovation white paper for associations became the catalyst for the Innovation Summit and his own volunteer engagement on the WSAE Board of Directors. Lanke will take the reigns as chair in December. He credits WSAE for facilitating rather than directing the innovation white paper initiative and for providing enough structure and resources to pursue it.

Lanke explained that many members step back from volunteer roles because they don't want to be bound by strict rules, out-dated regulations or reporting requirements. Members want to develop networks and engage other professionals. The question is, How can associations best align their own strategies with the professional goals of their members?

Imagine how your own association would consider an idea suggested by a member who had never served on a committee before. The idea is relevant, but there is no precedent in the organization on how to move forward with such a project. How would it be received by the association? What is the approval process? Who controls the approval process? What barriers exist for the completion of the project? How do you remove them?

This Peer-to-Peer call was hosted by the Membership Engagement discussion group. Look for more Peer-to-Peer discussions on relevant topics coming soon.

WSAE is proud to partner with Institute for Organization Management, the U.S. Chamber's professional development program for non-profit executives, and offer two $500 partial tuition scholarships to one of Institute's 2014 sites. The two scholarships, available to any WSAE member, will be awarded to students attending Institute for the first time to assist with enrollment fees and cannot be combined with any other Institute scholarships.

For over 90 years, Institute has educated association and chamber leaders across the country through its national program, highly rated curriculum and high caliber instructors. Thousands of executives have attended Institute sites across the country to strengthen their management skills, learn industry best practices, and gain a broad national perspective from peers. Institute has helped them build stronger organizations, become strong business advocates and better serve their members. In addition, you can earn up to 96 credit hours toward your CAE certification as Institute's curriculum is directly tied to the CAE's body of knowledge.

Upon completion of the Institute program, graduates receive the IOM recognition which allows them to use the letters "IOM" in public mention and professional correspondence. The IOM recognition signifies the completion of 96 hours of course instruction in nonprofit management and commitment to the industry.

If you are interested in this scholarship opportunity, contact Michelle Czosek, at mczosek@wsae.org by Nov. 11. The two scholarship vouchers will be provided on a first come, first served basis to qualified members.

Early registration deadline for Winter Institute is Nov. 22.
