JUNE 2024

"Nothing is rich

but the inexhaustible wealth of nature.

She shows us only surfaces,

but she is a million fathoms deep."

-Ralph Waldo Emerson

FLEDGING IS IMMINENT!!!

Moxie and Jamie are now officially empty-nesters, but their work is still not done. Tom, Cindy, Storm, and River have all been banded, have left the nest box, and are toddling around the rooftop of the I&M Building. As they explore, they are exercising their wings in anticipation of their first flight, which will occur when Mother Nature tells them they're ready. Moxie and Jaimie are still bringing them food so they get strong, but now the young falcons can feed themselves. Every now and then, you can catch a glimpse of one or more of them from the nest box camera. I&M has turned the camera a bit so we can better see both the nest box and the roof area around it. Keep watching! You might get to see a fledging!

MARK YOUR CALENDARS: JUNE 4

Thanks to the Little Turtle Chapter of the American Association of Zookeepers, the Chipotle on Lima Rd. is doing a fundraiser for Soarin' Hawk on June 4. Between the hours of 4:00 - 8:00 PM, 25% of sales will be donated to Soarin' Hawk.

Thank you, AAZK!

Important: The "fine print" says that for them to count toward the fundraiser, online orders must be placed for pickup only from the Lima Rd. location, between 4:00-8:00 PM on June 4. Delivery orders and gift cards don't qualify.

THIS IS WHY

On May 5, 2024, 4:30pm, Soarin' Hawk Volunteers Sharon Partridge, Brian Grubb, and Jason Gase released the red-tailed hawk that was admitted to the clinic on March 5, 2024 with a broken clavicle. The hawk was released where it was found, just north of Roanoke, IN. The hawk exited the carrier and sat on the ground for several minutes before taking flight.

In addition to Sharon, Brian, and Jason, there were 3 adults and 5 children present.

EAGLES 101

JOIN US!

Baby season is upon us!

It seems like only yesterday we had 23 baby kestrels at the same time in our ICU! Some of us have fond memories of having to wear a hot Ghillie Suit to hand feed them and the challenge of catching and weighing each one as they all flew around one of our outdoor rehab enclosures. Luckily, most of them learned to self-feed pretty quickly, but the weighing became progressively more difficult as they learned how to fly better and avoid us.

Right now in our ICU, we have 3 young screech owls, a young red-tailed hawk, a VERY young Cooper's hawk, a young barred owl, and a young kestrel. All are doing well, and will be released when they are old enough and have passed "mouse-hunting school."

You can share in the wonder of raptor babies (and adults) if you become a Soarin' Hawk volunteer! There are many rewarding jobs to choose from, and lots of really great people to work with. Please contact our volunteer coordinator, Gigi Stewart, at gigi.stewart@soarinhawk.org

Thanks to people like you, we were able to rescue, rehabilitate, and release this beautiful Great Horned Owl, who came to us starving and emaciated. After a few weeks in our facility, he was released, to continue life in the wild. Won't you make a donation, so we can help others like him? No contribution is too small!
