Aloha our beloved parish 'ohana,

Have you ever noticed that when we pass the peace here at St. James’, there is so much joy? It is palpable. I think the joy that is so palpable in this place comes from the fact that as Paul says in his letter to the Church at Corinth, “Now you (we) are the body of CHRIST and individual members of it.”

So what does it mean to be the Body of Christ? With Jesus’ death on the Cross and his Resurrection and the coming of the Holy Spirit, the Body of Christ became the hands and feet of Jesus throughout the world, so that his mission statement, from the prophecy of Isaiah, would be fulfilled throughout the ages to come. By the time Paul wrote his letter to the church at Corinth, about 55 AD, the number of believers had grown. They no longer thought of themselves as God’s chosen people, but rather as the BODY of CHRIST. The focus, the emphasis, as it always is in the Bible, is on the community gathered for worship.

As God’s temple, inhabited by God’s Holy Spirit, they formed a powerful fellowship which was as striking in its diversity as it was in its unity. And the joy of the Lord was their strength. The JOY OF THE LORD is certainly where the strength St. James’ lies. Just like our own physical bodies, we, as the Body of Christ, need all of our parts, because we are dependent on one another for the fullness of our lives. God is not simply saving individuals and preparing them for heaven; rather he is creating a people among whom God can dwell and who, in their life together, will produce God’s life and character in all its unity and diversity. And when that happens, through the power of God’s Holy Spirit, in a congregation such as St. James’ or any other congregation, regardless of denomination, The Joy of the Lord abounds.

Blessings, Love, and Peace,

Marnie+

From Rev. Linda

I was thrilled to be able to attend Dr. Bill Heran's ordination to the transitional Diaconate at Holy Nativity Church on Oahu.

It was lovely and moving service. Congratulations Rev. Bill!

Shrove Tuesday

Calling all St. James’ Parish men—Shrove Tuesday, March 4th, is the annual St. James’ Parish Pancake Supper. We are in need of one or more men to chair this event held at St. James’ in Waimea. If you are willing to chair this years Pancake Supper please call the church office at 808.885.4923 or see David, our rector, ASAP. Shrove Tuesday is an evening of fun and fellowship as the men of the parish prepare a pancake, bacon and sausage dinner for the parish. Traditionally, pancakes are associated with this day because making them was a way to use up rich foods such as eggs, milk, and sugar before the fasting of such delicacies during the season of the 40 days of Lent.

Sunday the Doves learned about Jesus as a 12 year old boy and about how he was missing for 3 days and then was found in the temple. He thought his parents would have known that’s where he would be, talking with the elders, asking and answering questions. He knew an amazing amount about God and could easily converse with older people. Kids did a word search regarding this topic and then made up motions and simple pictures about the meaning of the Lord’s Prayer.

Enjoy the day,

Back to the "Good Old Days"

By Jeanne Savage

Tonight’s Community Meal in the Pavilion really felt like the “good old days,” like the Meal back in the Pre-Covid days some years ago. The Pavilion was packed, the music made you sing along, there were keiki everywhere and it seemed like no one wanted to leave. It helped that it was a beautiful Waimea night. We served a delicious meal of spaghetti, meat sauce, salad and thick garlic toast. There was piping hot vegetable soup and a myriad of tempting homemade desserts to choose from.

Our meal was sponsored by the Kamuela Inn and Tony & Jennifer Teare. The Kamuela Inn supplied an army of enthusiastic volunteers to help serve and Tony and Jennifer handed out bags of fresh produce. We were without Frankie tonight (who normally does the work of 6 humans) but we pulled together, rose to the occasion and hoped to make him proud. Dickie, who normally helps park cars was also under the weather, so Paul Lee had Richard as his new Jedi parking apprentice.

Marcelino was the musician tonight and much of the crowd couldn’t help but sing aloud to some familiar favorites because “every little thing gonna be alright.” Logan jumped in to give Marcelino a well-deserved break and dazzled the crowd with his own masterful lyrics.

Jinny Lee was my partner in crime at the dessert table where we gave out brownies, cupcakes, red velvet cake, Jinny’s gingerbread, shortbread cookies, snickerdoodles, a pineapple upside-down cake and Lori Rosa’s new creation – a “fruit cocktail upside-down cake” which she brought hot out of the oven halfway through the meal. The biggest hit of the night had to be the 4 large pans of fresh banana pudding (with Nila Wafers on top) that the Kamuela Inn volunteers brought with them. Not a lick was left over much to everyone’s dismay.

There was so much Aloha in the room. Rev. Marnie led the pule and we gave thanks for the opportunity to be together. Hans warmly greeted everyone at the start of the line, Logan, Lynn and Steve kept everything running smoothly. Kapuna lingered at their tables with old friends, keiki who I have watched grow up, ate quickly and ran outside to play. There was so much heartfelt laughter.

A young man approached me with his friend. He explained that she had just arrived in town having been displaced by the fires in L.A. She asked if she could pay for her meal. I explained that the meal was already paid for by our sponsors and that she, like everyone else there, was our guest – an extended part of our ‘ohana. She lowered her head, tears in her eyes. Later, she returned with flowers in a makeshift vase and asked me to take them as a token of thanks. I gave them a prominent place on the dessert table and told her that her presence and her flowers would add to the beauty of our gathering. She teared up again, so did I.

This week, our Community Meal Outreach Ministry served a total of 685 meals between deliveries and those served from the pavilion.  As a long-time volunteer in the Pavilion, I realize that I really only see one aspect of the Community Meal. As I watch folks making human connections, I realize that food is just the conduit. I can’t help but think about the hard work and effort made by the other teams of volunteers making the meal possible each week.

There are those who plan, others who order supplies, some who pick up Costco donations. There are teams who prep, chop, cook, bake, pack deliveries and make deliveries. There are also those who set up in the pavilion, serve, clean up, do the dishes, do the laundry, do inventory, clean out freezers, etc. As they work together to accomplish their tasks each week, they do so with love and laughter and familiarity and make connections with each other. Different side of the same coin. They are “like-hearted” folks who together are “building community one meal at a time.“

Help Wanted!!

Our ministry to the youngest in our midst is growing by leaps and bounds! We are in need of volunteers for After School Tutoring held every Wednesday at St. James’ from 1:15-3:00 PM. Do you have a few hours to spare every week? We would love to have you! Please contact Susan Acacio, Youth Ministries Coordinator at 808-895-2720.

From Laura Williams

Last Sunday the lesson was The Circle of the Church Year. The keiki enjoyed the story, noticing that the calendar in the Godly Play classroom was the same as the circle of the church year in the story. They were able to point out the “three great times”(Christmas, Easter, and Pentecost), and the “times for getting ready to enter these mysteries” (Advent, Lent and the Sundays after Easter). They noticed that the church tells time by colors as well as by clocks, and that the colors in the church change and match the colors on the calendar in the classroom. One of the keiki put the clock back together as she proudly pointed out how much she has learned coming to Godly Play!

Piano Gathering Dust?

We have a keiki in need of a keyboard piano with weighted keys and pedals. Do you have one you are willing to donate? If so, please contact the Parish Office.

Aloha,

I have been asked about the homily of the Bishop of Washington, the Right Reverend Mariann Edgar Budde, delivered on Tuesday, January 22, 2025, during A Service of Prayer for the Nation at Washington National Cathedral.

Bishop Budde’s words were faithful to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and a clarion call to live into the hope of the beloved community. She had a unique opportunity to fulfill her ordination promise to “be merciful to all, show compassion to the poor and strangers, and defend those who have no helper” (see the Book of Common Prayer, page 518, “The Ordination of a Bishop”).

I hope all Episcopalians in the Diocese of Hawaiʻi will read the full text of her homily (and not just listen to a sound bite): A Service of Prayer for the Nation Homily Text by Bishop Mariann, Jan 22, 2025. Please share it broadly with friends and family members. I hope it will be reproduced on the websites of congregations. I hope it will be discussed and engaged.

Her words shared the teaching of the Episcopal Church and of the message of the Gospel.

After you carefully read the text of the homily, I urge you to read again the “Sermon on the Mount” and the “Judgement of the Nations” in the Gospel of Matthew:

As we consider the days ahead, we must be resolute in our call as Disciples of Jesus Christ to be living examples of mercy and compassion, justice and righteousness, faith and hope.

I leave you with the three verses of Scripture that I hope guide my life:

  • “Happy are people who show mercy, because they will receive mercy.” (Matthew 5:7)
  • “Know this, my dear brothers and sisters: everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to grow angry. This is because an angry person doesn’t produce God’s righteousness.” (James 1:19-20)
  • “He has told you, human one, what is good and what the Lord requires from you: to do justice, embrace faithful love, and walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:8)

Please pray for Bishop Budde as she faces a backlash from some corners. As your Bishop, please know that I stand with her and support what she said in her homily as a faithful witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I pray all Disciples will have such courage.

Again, please read and share her homily, reread the lessons of Jesus from the Gospel of Matthew, and ruminate and pray about your faithful discipleship in these times.

Please know that you are in my prayers. Please pray for me.

Your servant in Christ Jesus,

+Bob

Words of Wisdom

Encounter

Jesus comes to us now, in the particularity of each moment and each circumstance, and waits for us to meet him. Look for him with open eyes, hear him with open ears, receive him with open hands, and engage him with an open heart. Pray for fresh encounters to meet him anew each day.
