President’s Message
Happy April!
It is a hopeful time of year with the longer daylight times, the warmer weather, and the bright colors of flowers. Hope the start of 2024 has been good for you.
Thank you to Kim Kamin, Director of Professional Development and Programs, for an excellent program celebrating World Home Economics Day on March 23. Our speakers, Melanie Schmitt of Texas Tech, and Chloe Shin of the University of Houston discussed Artificial Intelligence – how to identify it and how to use it in our work in Family and Consumer Sciences. They provided much to think about as AI becomes a significant part of our world. This program saw the highest registration of any of our programs – 90 people! These registrations included colleagues from the Caribbean, Canada, and Malaysia. If you were not able to attend, please access the link provided in this newsletter.
Our next major event will be the IFHE-US Sharon McManus Cultural Event that will be held on Thursday evening, June 6 in Minneapolis. Kim Kamin has been working on the speaker and location. The focus is on Native American culture and foods. More information is in this newsletter.
The IFHE-US Annual Business Meeting will be held during the AAFCS Annual Meeting in Minneapolis. The date and time will be Thursday, June 6 from 1 pm to 2:30 pm CDT. This will be a hybrid meeting. If you would like to join by Zoom, please email me at sue.buck@wisc.edu so I may send you the Zoom link and agenda. Hopefully many of you will be able to attend to learn about the accomplishments of the past year and plans for the 2024-2025 year.
There are still IFHE-US History Books available. Copies will be available to purchase at the AAFCS Annual Meeting in Minneapolis. The cost is $5 for members and $15 for nonmembers.
The next IFHE World Congress in Galway, Ireland is just a couple of months away. June will be a busy month with the IFHE-US events in Minneapolis followed by the Congress two weeks later. IFHE-US is also sponsoring a Pre-Congress tour of Ireland. We have 35 people participating in a home economics focused week of travel from Dublin to Galway. We are looking forward to learning more about the culture, history, and beautiful landscapes of the country as well as meeting our colleagues from around
the world!
Thank you to all our members for your continued support of IFHE and IFHE-US. Our work in the US and around the world is important for the sustainability of individuals, families, and communities.
See you in Minneapolis and/or Ireland!
Sue Buck
President, IFHE-US
