COLLEGE PLANNING MEETING FOR JUNIOR PARENTS/GUARDIANS
*If you've already had your College Planning Meeting in November/December, you may disregard this message.
Dear Junior Parent/Guardian,
In order to assist and support students and families through the college planning process that takes place this year, Mercy Counselors began providing services in November to all Juniors and their parents/guardians in an individual College Planning Meeting. If you did not have the opportunity to meet with your daughter’s counselor in November or December, these meetings will continue this semester and take place in-person at Mercy High School during the months of January and February.
This is an opportunity for you and your daughter to meet with her Counselor to focus on the following:
- Review of transcript to discuss high school grade trends
- Discussion about: college admission tests (ACT/SAT) and test preparation, building a college list, and identifying colleges the student has an interest in
- Sharing resources that can assist parents and students in the planning process
- Discuss student and Counselor roles and responsibilities during the college planning and admissions process
To best prepare for their College Planning Meeting, students and parents have important responsibilities:
-
Students are required to complete the Student College Interest Questionnaire found in the Survey section of SCOIR, at least two days prior to the meeting. The information gathered will enable us to provide guidance and direction specific to your student’s interests and needs in regards to college planning. If the survey/questionnaire has not been completed in the timeframe required, your meeting will be canceled and may be rescheduled if time permits.
-
Parents are encouraged to complete a “Parent Brag Sheet” which allows you to tell us about your student to help assist us when writing a letter of recommendation and building a college list. This form can be accessed in your SCOIR parent account: once logged in, you will see the ‘Surveys’ link under your name in the left corner. If you do not already have an account, an invitation to SCOIR to set-up an account was sent via email on Thursday, November 7 (if you don't see it in your inbox, please check your Spam folder). Please contact Ms. Tosha Willis at twillis@mhsmi.org if you did not receive the invite, or need the invitation re-sent.
If you haven't already had your meeting during the Fall semester, parents will need to schedule the College Planning Meeting online, using the applicable link below. Second semester meetings will take place beginning January 14 and continue through February. Registration will close 3 days prior to each available meeting date. When scheduling your meeting, please be sure to schedule a time that works with your schedule and your daughter’s schedule. Ideally, it is best to schedule the meeting when she is unscheduled from class. However, we understand that the coordination of multiple schedules can be challenging and finding a time that works for all parties may necessitate the need for a student to miss a class.
