AI Symposium - Agenda Sneak Peek


On Friday, April 26, the CSU TECH Hub will host a day-long symposium on artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on teaching, research and more. The event will take place in the ballroom of Fenn Tower, 1983 E. 24th St., and will feature breakout sessions and guest speakers.

ETHICS, RISKS & BENEFITS

This session will examine the laws, policies and regulations that govern AI use and will weigh the benefits of generative AI use in higher education, industry and government with anticipated ethical concerns and risks for various stakeholders linked to security, privacy and compliance. The session will also explore the biases embedded in AI and how it can perpetuate discrimination and how AI can be used to promote equity by empowering diverse populations. Speakers:

  • Dr. Angel Reyes-Rodriguez, Director, McNair Scholars Program
  • Brian Ray, Professor of Law and Director, Center for Cybersecurity and Privacy Protection
  • Dr. Marcus Schultz-Bergin, Assistant College Lecturer, Philosophy and Comparative Religion


TEACHING

This session will identify ways to use generative AI in teaching, specifically, demonstrating ways it can be used in K-12 and higher education settings, focusing on writing, collaboration, and use among neurodiverse students. Speakers:

  • A panel of students sharing their experiences with using generative AI
  • The Cleveland Teaching Collaborative leadership team hosting a roundtable discussion on Innovate Ohio's new AI Toolkit


RESEARCH

This session will identify ways to use generative AI in research and weigh the strengths and limitations of its use. It will also showcase the efforts of faculty to use AI as a tool to facilitate more effective research as well as efforts to study and create new AI platforms. Speakers:

  • Dr. Rachel Lovell, Assistant Professor, Criminology and Sociology and Director, Criminology Research Center
  • Dr. Eric Shearer, Associate Professor, Mechanical Engineering and Director, Center for Human-Machine Systems


SERVICE

This session will identify ways to use generative AI in service and weigh its strengths and limitations. Speakers:

  • Dr. Patty Stoddard Dare, Professor, Social Work and Director of Women's and Gender Studies Program


WORKFORCE

This session will explore how AI is being used in industry and business. Speakers:

  • Jared Limberg, Partner, Travel & Transportation & Consumer Goods, IBM Consulting
  • Elizabeth Stahl, Director and Distinguished Engineer, IBM


UNIVERSITY INFRASTRUCTURE & SUPPORT

This session will identify effective processes, strategies and infrastructure from other universities that have successfully integrated AI across their campuses and consider what is applicable and possible at CSU. Speakers:

  • Dr. Andrew Kersten, Dean, College of Arts and Sciences
  • Dr. Richard Schoephoerster, Dean, Washkewicz College of Engineering
