The month of May reminds us of several important issues that must be recognized, including Sexual Assault Prevention Month. Sadly, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 8 men in Canada will experience sexual violence during their lifetime. The rates of violence against Indigenous women are even higher! Sexual assault and harassment are persistent forms of gender-based violence (GBV) and are rooted in gender inequality. During this month, support survivors, community service providers and advocates to help raise awareness of sexual assault. Everyone deserves to live free from the fear of threats, violence and exploitation. Learn more about Resources for assistance.
EAPO will once again be participating in the annual Victims and Survivors of Crime Week (May 12-18), to raise awareness of the issues victims of crime face and the many programs, services and assistance, including laws in place, to help them and their families. Learn about the upcoming Virtual Learning Series, Gender-based Violence among Older Adults: Supportive Interventions and Conference on Safe Havens: Emergency Shelter Solutions for Older People in Canada.
EAPO in collaboration with Pan-Canadian partners have launched the 2024 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Campaign (WEAAD) - "Age with Attitude ". Be sure to check it out and help us promote WEAAD using this new Toolkit and social media marketing materials.
We hope you enjoy reading this month’s issue, which includes an abundance of resources and articles of interest, as well as information about upcoming events planned with you, our growing family of subscribers, in mind.

It was inspiring to see the community come together to honor our seniors and recognize the invaluable contributions they continue to make to our society.

eFit for Individuals & Caregivers: Substance Use (Toolkit)
Many older adults use alcohol, prescription medication, cannabis and other substances to address and cope with issues such as sleep, loneliness, pain or other health issues. This is often done in a way that is not consistent with legal and medical guidelines and can have lasting effects on an individual’s own health, relationships and employment. (Sagelink)
