Last week, I wrote about a bug in Final Cut Pro that prevents dynamic updates when a Photoshop graphic changes. This week, I have a work-around for dynamic linking that mostly fixes this.

Then, in turn-around is fair play, I have a tutorial on dynamic linking between Photoshop and Premiere Pro. This works better than with Final Cut Pro, but there are some hidden gotchas you need to watch for.

I've spent the last month testing a new OWC SSD RAID and I learned a lot about what we can do with APFS! You'll find the review below along with another tutorial highlighting powers in Apple's filing system that I didn't know existed.

In the news:

Last week, Tyler Perry put an $800 million studio expansion on hold after seeing OpenAI's AI-based video generator "Sora." As Tyler said: "Jobs are going to be lost."

VITAC announced Verbit Captivate, a proprietary AI-powered captioning solution. This combines industry-leading technology with VITAC's captioning experience to provide high-accuracy captions, fast turnaround times, flexible, customizable solutions, and support and integrations for multiple file types and platforms.

Digital Trends reports on a next-generation optical disc that can store up to 1.6 PETAbytes of data. (Storage goes from kilo > mega > giga > tera > petabytes!) There are 1,024 TB in one PB. Too soon to know if this will be commercially developed - but I sure hope so. It would solve all of our archiving problems.

Hedge introduced DropOff, an intuitive, web-based file-sharing app. Working with the LucidLink file system, this offers sending and receiving files directly into your storage system. Cost is per GB used, rather than a monthly rental.

Amazon Tips

You are not forgotten. I'm in the middle of editing a major project. Webinars will restart in a couple of weeks.

About a month ago, OWC loaned me their new ThunderBlade X8, high-speed, high-capacity SSD RAID storage. I promptly broke it. But! in discovering why it stopped working, I learned a whole lot about the APFS file system and why what I was doing was wrong. Once you understand how to use APFS, OWC's new ThunderBlade X8 is amazing. Here's my review.

This next tutorial is a spin-off from my ThunderBlade X8 review. A year ago, when I got my first SSD RAID, I cleverly set it up for both production and Time Machine. This year, I learned that I set it up wrong. My configuration worked, but it was slower, more awkward and more stressful on the system than it should be. Here's what you need to know about how SSD RAIDs are different from HDD RAIDs.

My most popular article last week was a look back at the early days of video tape. While I enjoyed telling my stories, I enjoyed reading your stories even more. If you read this before comments started appearing - take another look.

And, if you are film buff, the comments in this article are worth reading as well.

AI is exploding across our industry. New AI companies are popping up like dandelions in the spring. With "AI" as the new buzz word I fully expect Bic pens to be AI-enabled sometime in the next few weeks. Me... I'm not so enthusiastic. Several of my current writing contracts prevent any use of AI due to copyright issues. I know we can't put AI back in the box, but I think there's a lot of pain to come. The Tyler Perry article presages this and, if you skipped over it, take a few minutes and read it.

All we can do is stay informed, experiment where it makes sense, and keep in close touch with our clients. Story-telling and communication are at the heart of what we do. AI, like other software, is a tool. But, unlike other tools, AI has the ability to fool clients into thinking that using a tool is the same thing as telling a story. They aren't - but that doesn't mean that AI won't have a major impact on jobs and budgets for all of us.

Until next Monday, stay hopeful, stay warm and edit well
