December 2023

A Gateway to Somewhere Beautiful

Cheers to 10 Years!

2013 - 2023

Our mission is to maintain gardens that are enjoyable, inspirational and used to educate people about gardening and its health and environmental benefits.

It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year!

What Is Your Favorite Christmas Story?

The holidays mean so many different things to each of us. They are a time for frosty mornings, twinkling lights and decorating the halls, making delicious treats and feasts, honoring family traditions, and creating new memories. And let's not forget gathering together and reading our favorite stories.

Plan to visit the Bridge and experience one of your favorite Christmas stories this holiday season. People of all ages will be delighted by storybook-themed vignettes throughout the gardens.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas

The Legend of the Candy Cane

The Polar Express

It's the perfect time to make new holiday memories with family and friends. While it's fun to see all the storybooks come to life during the day, the Bridge becomes truly magical in the evening when the gardens are aglow. You have plenty of time to visit as the vignettes will be on display through January 9. Come look for your favorite story today!

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

'Twas the Night Before Christmas

The Snowman

Stroll through our Atrium and look for A Gingerbread Christmas.

Venture along the Bridge in the evening to see many of our storybook vignettes among the twinkling lights.

We'd like to shout out a big Thank You to everyone who came out on a frosty November 29th for the Grand Lighting of the Bridge and the Lighting Up of Lake Lure. Mayor Carol Pritchett and Pastor Alex Heafner, from Chimney Rock Baptist Church, provided welcoming remarks prior to Flowering Bridge Chairwoman Kathy Tanner leading the countdown for turning on the lights. Elementary students from the Lake Lure Classical Academy were led to the stage by Santa himself and then regaled visitors with favorite holiday carols. The festivities concluded with LLFB volunteers serving warm cider and cookies.

Our "Idea Man" Shares His Thoughts

2023 has been a milestone year for the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge. With the end of our tenth anniversary year approaching, we'd like to share a few recollections from Bill Miller, the "idea man" behind the Bridge.

"In 2010, when I first had a vision of a blooming pedestrian bridge, there was traffic still crossing the bridge. But this visit, when we stood at the center, I closed my eyes to recall the sight of the bridge with nothing at all on it. It was a blank canvas waiting for some artists.

In October, Bill and Ellie Miller brought members of their church group to the Bridge for a visit. "We and our small group loved our time on the Flowering Bridge. Every time we go, we are amazed at the creativity, imagination and beautiful work by the volunteer team."

"They came with shovels, wheelbarrows and visions of a beautiful garden on a cement bridge. As I thought of the small group of original volunteers, which soon grew in number, the thousands of work hours given, and the thousands of donors and unseen supporters that made it possible, it brought tears to my eyes. They are why we came on a Tuesday, to see the garden volunteers working together as a team and talking to all the visitors. Today, the gardens have more than doubled in size, variety and artistry...and I believe there is not another like the Flowering Bridge!"

December, being the last month of the year,

reminds us what a great 2023 was and

makes us think of what is to come in 2024!

Mr. McGregor Says...

Even though it's cold outside, Peter and his buddies Lily Bobtail and Benjamin Bunny are wide awake listening for Santa Claus. Stop by my garden today and see how I hid all my carrots from those pesky rabbits. And don't forget to make your Christmas list and mail to Santa!

Friends of the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge is a volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Donations to help preserve and maintain the Bridge gardens and to support our new Education Center are always appreciated – and tax-deductible.
